The ‘Alouettes’ is the polar opposite of the village-level ‘Grives’ – sometimes the bird theme is a bit confusing. The premier cru also comes from Monts Luisants, but at the base of the slope and not the top. The result is a wine with more black fruit than red and much more concentration and depth. There is a sensual appeal here and a more substantial heft that suggest that this should age well with time. Open in five years and drink over the next 20.

The Elegance and Minerality of a Premier Cru from Morey-Saint-Denis

    The Estate
Founded in 1872, Domaine Ponsot is a historic figure in Burgundy. Spanning an 8-hectare vineyard, the estate stands out for its minimalist approach, free of pesticides since 1977, and its pioneering role in estate bottling as early as the 1930s. Today, the property remains in the hands of the founding family, led by Rose-Marie Ponsot and supported by Alexandre Abel. The estate is renowned for its nature-friendly practices and its technological innovations against counterfeiting.

    The Vineyard
This red wine from France comes from a single one-hectare plot located within the climat des Alouettes, at the heart of the Clos des Monts-Luisants in Morey-Saint-Denis. Separated by just one meter from the renowned Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, the 25-year-old vines thrive on lean, clay-rich soil. This distinctive terroir, composed of limestone scree resting on a bedrock of Comblanchien limestone, provides excellent natural drainage. This geology forces the roots to draw nutrients from deep within the soil, giving the wine a remarkable minerality.

    The Vintage
In the Côte d'Or, 2023 was marked by a generous harvest, offering both good volume and optimal berry ripeness. The climatic conditions of this vintage helped preserve a lively, refined acidity within the grapes.

    Winemaking and Aging
The grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting carried out directly in the vineyard to preserve the freshness of the fruit. After destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats, relying exclusively on indigenous yeasts. The Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Cuvée des Alouettes" 2023 is then aged for 18 to 20 months. True to its philosophy, the estate uses no new oak, favoring French oak barrels averaging twenty years old. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, following the lunar cycles.
