A fresh red, with alluring blue and black fruit in a pure, clean style supported by a spine of iron that imparts power and precision. Offers an unadorned profile, with any hint of oak integrated way in the backdrop, showcasing violet details and mineral intensity on the clean finish. Still tightly coiled, with a taut feel to the finely polished tannins. This needs time. Best from 2026 through 2040. 1,800 cases made.

At once fresh and deep with excellent precision, this is a wonderful Côte-Rôtie that leaps across the palate. Stacks of fresh forest berries, delicate pepper and red roses. The fine tannins build beautifully in the long, vibrant finish. Excellent aging potential. A cuvée of syrah from more than 20 plots across the appellation. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Cask samples tasted at the domaine. Sample 1: Blend of sites. Blood and graphite on the nose, gravel and spice as well. The palate has taut tannins, a richness and density as well as grip and firmness throughout. Savoury and dark and it finishes rounder than it starts. Very primary and introverted, needs time. Sample 2: Neve. Lovely blue fruit on the nose, juicy and with a liquorice note. The tannins are firm yet broad on the palate, still tight but with lovely fruit beneath. Rounded, with a graphite, earthy, bloody note lurking. Youthful. Sample 3: Leyat. Meat and fig and graphite. Taut tannins and meaty, stony, with a gamey edge on the tightly coiled finish. (AC)

The taut 2022 Côte-Rôtie Ampodium reveals black cherry, red plum, crushed violets and a touch of cedar on the nose. Medium-bodied with concentrated flavors, the 2022 concludes persistently with an elegant finish. More tannic than the 2023 tasted alongside, it will benefit from at least two more years in bottle.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Ampodium 2022 from Domaine Rostaing

    Tasting

    Appearance
The wine reveals a deep red color, enhanced by delicate violet highlights.

    Nose
Highly precise, the aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of wild black fruit jam, blending blackberry and cherry. With aeration, it reveals beautiful complexity through hints of smoked licorice, Sichuan pepper, black olive, and leather, complemented by subtle nuances of cocoa, violet, and sweet spices.

    Palate
Generous and well-balanced, the palate offers a velvety texture supported by very fine tannins. The opulence of the fruit harmonizes perfectly with a lovely freshness, leading to a persistent and majestic finish evoking warm stone, black berries, and spices.

    Food and wine pairings

This cuvée pairs ideally with richly flavored red meats such as duck or beef, as well as slow-cooked dishes like daube or lamb shoulder. It also complements game beautifully, whether feathered or furred, such as truffled pigeon or venison, and pairs very well with aged hard cheeses.

    Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate Ampodium 2022 in its youth, decanting for several hours is strongly recommended. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 17°C. While it can be enjoyed today, this wine will reveal its full potential from 2026 onward and can be cellared until around 2037.

The authentic expression of the Côte-Rôtie terroirs by Domaine Rostaing

    The estate

Founded in 1971 by René Rostaing, the Domaine Rostaing is a benchmark estate in the Rhône Valley. Located in the village of Ampuis, this family-owned property has grown by gradually incorporating prestigious historic vineyards. Since 2015, Pierre Rostaing has led the estate with the same artisanal rigor as his father. With around ten hectares of vineyards, the estate stands out for its terroir-driven approach and its limited production, offering wines of great purity that appeal to enthusiasts worldwide.

    The vineyard

The vines thrive on the steep slopes of the renowned Côte-Rôtie appellation. This cuvée comes from a mosaic of thirteen distinct parcels, mainly located in the Côte Blonde and La Landonne sectors. The soils are varied, combining poor, silica-rich mica schists with darker, iron-rich soils. The vineyard is managed using sustainable practices, favoring manual work, natural grass cover, and banning synthetic herbicides to preserve biodiversity and the authenticity of the terroir.

    The vintage

The year was marked by particularly favorable weather conditions, with a hot and dry summer. This intense sunshine allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, promoting excellent concentration while preserving the freshness essential to the balance of the harvest.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes are harvested by hand with rigorous sorting. The winemaking approach is minimally interventionist, with spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts and destemming adjusted according to the vintage. The aging of Ampodium 2022 lasts approximately 22 months in demi-muids, with a very limited proportion of 5% new oak, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit and the wine’s mineral identity.
