    Wine Spectator

    Kristen Bieler

Lifted and fresh, this perfumed style has pretty raspberry and red berry flavors, detailed with white pepper, dried flowers and shiso leaf. Reveals a racy edge to the palate, with generous savory, herbaceous notes woven in. Graceful and lean, with firmness and focus. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2032. 1,020 cases made, 112 cases imported.

The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Habemus Papam is vinified from two separate parcels, blending 64% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and a dollop of Counoise. Fermented with 100% whole clusters, it showcases bright red fruits, licorice, menthol and a crushed rocks twist. The 2021 is perfectly balanced and utterly refined.

Leafy, spicy, minty fresh, and peppery, the kirsch notes are sweet, creamy, vibrant, and lively. Supple and soft in texture, with a spicy accent to the dark red fruits on the mid-palate and in the finish, this is a pleasure to taste now, and will be even better with a year or two of aging. The wine was made from blending close to 64% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 1% Counoise. Drink from 2024-2035.

    Description

A full-bodied and fresh red wine from the Rhône Valley

    The estate

Founded in 1874, the Domaine Santa Duc located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail brings to life great wines from the Rhône Valley. Taking over from his father Edmond, Yves Gras has been steering the vineyard towards organic farming since 1985 and contributes to the development beyond borders of the renown of Gigondas wines. For six generations now, the Gras family has been expressing through its cuvées the nuances and identity of great terroirs of emblematic appellations such as Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape or the Côtes du Rhône.

    The vineyard

The Habemus Papam cuvée from Domaine Santa Duc comes from a vineyard spread over 2.9 hectares. Located in the heart of the Rhône Valley, this estate evolves on soils composed of limestone, sand, clay and rolled pebbles. The vines, managed with organic and biodynamic farming, are on average 60 years old.

    Vinification and aging

Following a selection in the vineyard and a sorting on the table, the destemmed berries undergo gravity-fed vatting. Fermentation lasts from 20 to 30 days and takes place in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Finally, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is aged in foudres and terracotta jars for 18 months.

    Blend

    Grenache, syrah.
