This great dry Riesling effortlessly combines stunningly refined stone-fruit aromas with fantastic concentration and delicacy. The grapefruit freshness at the super-vibrant finish underlines all of this beautifully. So delicious now, but also great aging potential. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Clos Häuserer is harvested at the bottom of the Hengst Grand Cru, on deep marl soils with clay, all the finer elements deposited from the decomposition of the Hengst. Ripe, juicy pear shines on the nose, edged with fine lemon peel. The palate is succulent, dripping with Mirabelle and lemon. The longer this is in the mouth, the more intense it gets. Yet the finish is relatively mild and smooth but imbued with that gorgeous grapefruit notion. (Bone-Dry)

From a gentle-sloping, east-facing vineyard planted in 1973, the 2022 Clos Häuserer Wintzenheim Riesling was still a bit reductive when I tasted it at the domaine in April 2024, yet the wine was also clear and pure as well as aromatic on the stony nose that intermingled ripe and concentrated fruit with the spicy notes of the calcareous marl terroir. Lush yet fine and elegant on the palate, this is a dense and intense, tightly structured Riesling with a long and intense mineral finish. The 2022 fermented fully dry to one gram per liter of residual sugar and comes in with 13.4% alcohol. Natural cork.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Riesling "Clos Hauserer" 2022 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

    Tasting notes

    Colour
Of great purity, the wine reveals a pale, luminous golden-yellow hue.

    Nose
Initially marked by a precise minerality and subtle smoky touches, the bouquet opens up with aeration to reveal aromas of citrus fruit, lime and white peach. Herbaceous and honeyed nuances complete this complex aromatic palette, deeply rooted in its limestone terroir.

    Palate
Full-bodied and smooth, the palate offers a remarkable balance between power and finesse. Completely dry, it stands out for its incisive, juicy acidity. The old vines lend a fine density, leading to a long, taut and vibrant finish.

    Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs beautifully with white fish or poultry in creamy sauces, as well as with regional specialities such as choucroute or coq au riesling. It also enhances smoked seafood, dishes based on green vegetables, and Asian cuisine, particularly sushi, ceviche and subtly spiced Thai dishes.

    Service and storage

Although already very enjoyable in its youth, this Riesling "Clos Hauserer" 2022 needs a few years of bottle ageing to reveal its full aromatic complexity. It has significant ageing potential, allowing it to be enjoyed over many years.

    Other characteristics

This wine has a resolutely dry profile with a residual sugar level of 1.1 g/l. Its alcohol content is 13.4%, with a total acidity of 4.3 g/l and a pH of 3.15.

The pure, mineral expression of a great white wine from Alsace

    The estate

Born in 1959 from the union of two winemaking families, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is an essential reference in Alsace. Located in Turckheim, the estate spans some forty hectares across exceptional terroirs. Today, the estate is run by Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to earn the title of Master of Wine, joined in 2019 by his son Pierre-Émile. A pioneer of responsible, demanding viticulture, the estate is committed to producing authentic wines that faithfully reflect the singularity of each plot, thanks to carefully controlled yields and a minimal-intervention approach.

    The vineyard

Located in the village of Wintzenheim, the "Clos Hauserer" is a 1.2-hectare monopole planted in 1973 at the foot of the Grand Cru Hengst. This terroir benefits from a warm microclimate and an east-facing orientation. Its deep soils rest on Oligocene limestone bedrock, covered with pebbles, iron-rich sandstone and marl. The vines, over fifty years old, draw the water and minerals they need through deep root systems. The vineyard is cultivated according to biodynamic principles, with meticulous, manual canopy management.

    The vintage

2022 offered generally mild conditions, sparing the vines from the severe spring frosts of the previous year. A sufficiently wet spring encouraged rapid growth. Summer and autumn proved particularly hot and dry, limiting disease pressure but causing water stress that reduced yields and affected flowering. Towards the end of the growing season, a few isolated storms brought welcome moisture, despite some localised hail, ahead of a harvest that ran from late August to late September.

    Winemaking and ageing

The winemaking of the Riesling "Clos Hauserer" 2022 reflects an approach of absolute respect for the terroir. Fermentation proceeds very slowly, driven exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for twelve months in 500-litre wooden foudres, during which time malolactic fermentation occurs naturally.
