Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett 2022 by Egon Muller
Tasting
Colour
This German white wine displays a pale yellow colour enhanced by delicate green hues.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of citrus fruits such as lemon and lime, accompanied by green apple. It then gains complexity with aromas of white peach, ripe yellow apple, white flowers and a pronounced minerality reminiscent of wet stone.
Palate
The palate opens light and lively, dominated by citrus and minerality. A subtle sweetness blends harmoniously with lemony freshness and mineral, stony notes. The finish is crisp and refreshing, carried by a sharp acidity that perfectly balances the fruit.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with roasted white meats, meaty fish or dishes in creamy white sauces. Its slight sweetness also makes it an excellent match for spicy Asian cuisine, while its minerality enhances oysters, seafood and light salads. It can equally be enjoyed on its own, as an aperitif.
Service and storage
There is no need to decant the Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett 2022. It is best enjoyed chilled. While it can be savoured young for its bright fruit, this wine has excellent aging potential and can be kept until at least 2062, provided it is stored lying down in a cool, dark place with constant humidity.
Other characteristics
This wine has a moderate alcohol content of 9%. It has a residual sweetness of between 40 and 60 grams per litre, perfectly balanced by the grape variety's natural acidity.
The purity and minerality of a white wine from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer by Egon Muller
The estate
Founded in 1797 following the acquisition of the estate by Jean-Jacques Koch, Egon Muller is a true institution in Germany, in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. Now run by Egon Müller IV, representing the sixth generation, the estate is internationally renowned for its traditional and minimal-intervention approach. As the only German member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini association, the estate stands out for its exclusive production of white wines from an exceptional terroir, offering cuvées of remarkable longevity and complexity.
The vineyard
Located near the peaceful village of Wiltingen, the famous Scharzhofberg vineyard stretches across steep, south and southeast-facing slopes, with gradients reaching up to 60%. The estate cultivates 8.3 hectares of vines here, some of which are ungrafted and date back to the 1880s. This unique terroir is characterized by a cool climate and deep soils composed of highly weathered Devonian slate, grey-blue and reddish in colour, rich in iron and rock, giving the grapes an unmistakable mineral character.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by a hot summer season, fortunately tempered by a cool and humid September. These conditions helped slow the accumulation of heat. Harvesting began late, in mid-September, but heavy rainfall in early October required a fast-paced harvest to preserve the quality and acidity of the berries.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with successive passes to select berries at optimal ripeness. The estate's philosophy favors minimal intervention. Accordingly, fermentation of the Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett 2022 takes place traditionally, using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in old thousand-litre oak casks, resting in deep, cool and humid historic cellars that allow for a slow development of aromas.
