An elegant, silky Gigondas by Famille Perrin
The estate
Established in Courthézon since the 16th century, Famille Perrin truly developed its winegrowing business from 1909 onwards. Now run by the fifth generation, it farms more than 300 hectares organically and biodynamically in the Rhône Valley. As the leading owner of organic vineyards on the finest terroirs of the southern Rhône, the family owns estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vinsobres and Cairanne.
The vineyard
The Gigondas vineyard from which La Gille comes is located mid-slope, west of the village, between the plain and the Dentelles de Montmirail. The soils are made up of limestone, calcareous marl, clay and a high proportion of safres (sandy soils). With a north-west exposure, certain plots are home to pre-phylloxera grenache vines planted on sand.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage is marked by numerous contrasts: a mild winter followed by a wet spring, then a summer alternating between hailstorms and drought. Harvesting required adaptation in the face of the risk of rain, but made it possible to pick very high-quality grapes with concentrated sugars. The red wines required long macerations to extract all the quintessence of the vintage.
Winemaking and ageing
The Gigondas Rouge La Gille 2023 was harvested by hand from August 17 to September 20 with rigorous sorting. A long maceration helps refine the tannins, with extraction carried out through manual punch-downs. Ageing continues for one year in large oak casks or in truncated-cone vats.
Grape varieties
This Rhône Valley wine is made from a blend of grenache and syrah.
