Cask sample. Rugged tannins and a richness on the brooding nose. Dark fruits and firm tannins, a core of dark, sleek fruit and good sense of freshness. Deep, dense and structured. Good ageing potential but still will drink young. (AC)

    Wine Spectator

    Kristen Bieler

Lush with good energy to match the generosity of the cherry and plum ripeness, underscored by chalky mineral elements. Red tea tannins keep a light grip on the salty, well-balanced finish, marked by sandalwood smoke and potpourri. Pretty and appealing. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2030.

Fruit-driven and pure on the nose, with blackberry, raspberry, violet, rose, and wild thyme. Approachable and juicy on the palate, polished tannins support a lingering finish of light tea and clove that adds dimension and length. Enjoy now alongside a Provençal herb-roasted chicken.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Les Cornuds 2023 Famille Perrin

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby red hue with violet highlights.

    Nose
The bouquet opens with great freshness, exhaling aromas of black berries, blackberries and flowers. With aeration, it reveals a lovely intensity of violet, black fruits, spices, black pepper and liquorice.

    Palate
With a medium to full body, the palate is lively and taut. The generous attack gives way to elegant tannins and refreshing acidity, offering great depth before stretching into a long, fruity finish.

    Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with spiced red meats, grilled steak or chicken, as well as with aged hard or semi-hard cheeses.

    Service and storage

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve Les Cornuds 2023 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed while young but will continue to evolve favourably, drinking well until around 2030.

The elegance and freshness of a red wine from Vinsobres

    The estate

The history of the Famille Perrin truly began in 1909 with Pierre Tramier's acquisition of Château de Beaucastel. Located in the Rhône Valley, this institution is now run by the fifth generation (Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile, Charles, Matthieu and César). A pioneer, the estate adopted organic farming as early as 1950 under the guidance of Jacques Perrin. With around 300 hectares under its control, the estate stands as a key reference, renowned for its deep respect for terroir and its constant quest for authenticity through balanced wines.

    The vineyard

The terroir of the Vinsobres appellation stands out for its altitude, with the vines for this cuvée perched at 400 metres in the historic lieu-dit of Les Cornuds. Sheltered from the mistral, this vineyard rests on slopes of stony and sandy marl, as well as on terraces of quaternary alluvium. These geological and climatic conditions provide ideal drainage and allow for slow ripening of the grapes, thus preserving a lovely natural acidity.

    The vintage

2023 began with a particularly warm and dry spring. The growing cycle then benefited from welcome rains at the start of July, before enjoying an Indian summer that extended until the end of October, offering ideal conditions for a slow and gradual ripening of the berries.

    Winemaking and aging

The manual harvest for Les Cornuds 2023 is decided upon after tasting and analysing the berries. After rigorous sorting, the grapes are fully destemmed and crushed. The Syrah ferments in conical wooden vats with punching down and pumping over, then is partly aged in barrels and concrete tanks. The Grenache, meanwhile, is vinified and aged exclusively in tanks to preserve its fruit. The final blend is made once malolactic fermentation is complete.

    Grape varieties

This wine is a blend of Syrah (50%) and Grenache (50%).
