The mouthfilling flavors of dark plum, raspberry tart and cocoa powder are supported by plenty of muscular tannins and firm acidity. Features intense sanguine notes and a finish that lingers with black olive, pepper and slate accents. Drink now through 2018. 1,100 cases made, 450 cases imported.

Deep ruby with a youthful purple hue. Fine nose of wild berries, ginger, sweet spices and discreet oak. The palate is rounded and rather silky with ample fruit, crushed berries, ginger, clove and vanilla notes, yet with integrated oak, good density, richness and length.

La Forge shows great power, built around uncompromising substance. The tannins are present, as is the ageing. They should integrate and deliver a wine capable of evolving well.

La Forge is consistently one of Bertrand's top wines, and the 2011 is simply stunning. The dense, heady perfume offers notes of raspberry, black plum, cherry, sweet spice and cocoa powder, which all carry through to the lush, full-weighted palate. The texture is like crushed velvet, with fine yet gripping tannins and ample acidity to keep the mouthfeel fresh. It's a complex and layered wine, with hints of licorice, tobacco leaf and black pepper that grace the finish. Drink 2016–2022.

    Description

The aromatic structure and creaminess of a great Languedoc wine

    The estate

Nestled in the heart of Languedoc, Gérard Bertrand reflects its founder’s commitment to showcasing the richness of Southern France’s terroirs. With a history spanning several decades, this estate is renowned for its expertise in crafting wines that powerfully and elegantly express the nuances of Languedoc’s finest vineyards.

    The vineyard

A cuvée paying tribute to Gérard Bertrand’s father, La Forge is a Languedoc wine from plots located within the eponymous lieu-dit.

Composed of Carignan (80-year-old vines) and Syrah (20-year-old vines), this terroir belongs to Domaine de Villemajou, the Bertrand family’s historic cradle, recognized as the first classified cru of Corbières and located within the Corbières-Boutenac appellation.

The name of this wine stems from the fact that the elements needed for a forge are found on this plot: wood for the fire and water to cool the metal.

    Winemaking and aging

Manual harvest. Aged for 10 to 12 months before bottling. An additional 12 months of aging is carried out before the bottles are released.

    Blend

Gérard Bertrand La Forge 2011 is a blend of Carignan and Syrah.
