    Robert Parker Wine Advocate

    Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Grapy, unformed, black raspberry liqueur and licorice-infused cassis notes leap from the glass of this opaque purple-colored wine. Sweet, plush, rich, and accessible, it is a forward, lush, concentrated effort that should drink well for two decades. While not one of Graham's most profound ports, it should evolve rapidly, providing immense crowd appeal. Importer: Premium Port Wines, Inc., San Francisco, CA; tel. (415) 401-1700

The richness and indulgence of a Vintage Port

    The estate

Founded in 1820 and acquired by the Symington family in 1970, the W&J Graham’s Port house is today the only independent British Port house.

Graham’s was one of the first houses to acquire its own vineyards in the Douro Valley, within the Duriense region of north-western Portugal, and it also demonstrates its pioneering spirit through a constant pursuit of perfection and the modernisation of its viticulture and winemaking methods.

Graham’s crafts Ports renowned far beyond its borders for their finesse, aromatic richness and concentration.

    The wine

Produced only in exceptional years, Vintage Ports are the most refined and distinctive signature of Graham’s, an essential Portuguese house.

    The vintage

The dry winter led to early budburst, but the rains in April and May slowed the vines' development and delayed flowering, resulting in poor fruit set and a small harvest. Despite moderate temperatures over the summer, ripening accelerated in September. The grapes were in excellent condition at harvest time, yielding high-quality fruit rich in sugar. Fermentation conditions were almost perfect, producing aromatic musts and promising wines for this vintage.
