The elegance of a great white Burgundy wine by Joseph Drouhin
The estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy, the Joseph Drouhin House is a true institution. Today led by the fourth generation, with Robert Drouhin and his daughter Véronique Boss-Drouhin, this prestigious name stands out for its pioneering commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture since 1994. The estate spans approximately 250 acres across sixty appellations, offering cuvées that faithfully and elegantly express all the richness of their respective terroirs, while perpetuating an uninterrupted family expertise.
The vineyard
Located south of the Côte de Beaune, the terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet is one of the emblematic villages of the famed Côte des Blancs. The vines flourish on gently sloping hillsides, benefiting from excellent exposure. The soils, generally light, display a beautiful geological complexity, combining limestone marls, yellow or red clays, as well as scree and limestone gravels.
The vintage
The year 2023 stands among the warmest vintages ever recorded in Burgundy, even surpassing the temperatures of the previous year. These exceptional weather conditions made it possible to bring the berries to perfect ripeness at harvest time, while preserving an acidity essential to the balance of the juices despite the intense summer heat.
Winemaking and aging
The crafting of this Chassagne-Montrachet Village 2023 follows a rigorous set of specifications, with grapes and musts sourced from partner growers. After manual harvesting and meticulous sorting, the whole bunches undergo slow pressing in a pneumatic press. The juices from the final pressing are carefully separated from the free-run juice. Following alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the wine benefits from fourteen to sixteen months of aging in oak barrels, including 20% new wood from French high-forest woodlands.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
