Powerful and refined at the same time, it’s an age-worthy wine that’s already tempting to drink. Generous apple, white peach and lime aromas give way to stony, flinty and tight flavors backed by nervy acidity that will need time to unravel. One of the truly great sites for chardonnay in the Côte d’Or, and this comes from 50-year-old vines. Best from 2028.

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 Joseph Drouhin

    Tasting

    Colour
The colour reveals an intense golden hue.

    Nose
The bouquet displays fine complexity, blending aromas of rose, fresh almond and citrus fruit with notes of honey, exotic wood and subtle spicy touches.

    Palate
Majestic and well-balanced, the palate offers a rich, full-bodied texture. Both lively and generous, it unfolds into a long, lingering finish, underpinned by a beautiful minerality.

    Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs perfectly with foie gras, shellfish (lobster, crab, crayfish), poultry or veal in white sauce, as well as delicate fish in butter sauce. It also goes wonderfully with blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort.

    Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 at a temperature of 14°C, taking care to let it breathe or briefly decant it around ten minutes before serving. This age-worthy wine can be cellared until around 2042.

    The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy, France, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure of the region. Now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin at the helm, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of around 103 hectares spread across 60 appellations. A pioneer in environmental practices, the estate stands out for its organic and biodynamic viticulture. As a member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini association, Joseph Drouhin produces wines renowned for their faithful expression of each terroir.

    The vineyard

The Corton-Charlemagne appellation stretches across the steep slopes of the Corton hill, at an altitude of between 280 and 330 metres. Facing south-west, this unique terroir rests on soils composed of clay-rich marl and limestone layers. The grapes for this vintage come mainly from the Languettes climat, which faces south, where vines around fifty years old thrive.

    The vintage

2022 offered very favourable weather conditions in Burgundy, particularly well-suited to growing white grape varieties. The growing season unfolded under mild conditions, allowing the grapes to reach an excellent level of ripeness at harvest.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes are hand-harvested in small perforated crates, followed by a rigorous sorting process. The berries then undergo slow, gentle pressing using pneumatic presses. After light settling, the juice is transferred into barrels. This Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 is aged for 18 to 21 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place directly in barrel.
