The 2022 Saint-Romain Blanc opens with aromas of peach, green apple and white flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, satiny and incisive palate that brings together generous fruit and tangy acidity. The Drouhin family has just acquired extensive domaine holdings in this appellation, so this will be a bottling to watch.

So fresh, elegant and well balanced, with tangy lemon zest and white peach skin flavors on a medium body, lifted by great acidity. Fermented in large oak barrels with a small percentage of new ones, it offers very subtle butter and spice accents. Not a well-known appellation, but it’s a fine wine. Drink or hold.

‘People need to know that Burgundy is still accessible, in appellations not of interest to investors,’ according to Véronique Drouhin. They have just bought an estate in St-Romain and there may be a special estate bottling of it in the future. Fresh and lively with a slight imprint of the Côte d’Or. Racy, and it should develop a bit more interest. (JR)

The 2022 Saint-Romain Villages, picked on September 5 and 13, has a light apple blossom and freshly squeezed lime bouquet. The palate is well-balanced, taut, and fresh, with fine acidity, orange pith, and a pear-tinged finish. Enjoy over the next three to five years.
