    Tamlyn Currin

Bottled on 29 August, 4 September, 14 to 16 October 2024. Already very expressive. Masses of ripe, sweet citrus interleaved with white flowers. Precise but light-cut acidity. Slight almond-milk ‘white-nuttiness’. Already delicious and easy to drink. I wonder if all those different bottling dates could mean that the wines might show more bottle variation? Interesting that they have chosen to be so transparent about it. (TC)

    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Saint-Véran Village 2023 by Joseph Drouhin

    Tasting notes

    Color
The color reveals a beautiful golden hue enhanced by subtle green highlights.

    Nose
The nose expresses a great aromatic richness carried by aromas of ripe yellow fruit, peach and pear, intertwined with floral notes reminiscent of acacia and honeysuckle. Delicate touches of musk, fresh almond, hazelnut and butter complete this bouquet.

    Palate
The palate seduces with its pleasant roundness that envelops the mouth. It offers a beautiful balance between fruity generosity and refreshing acidity, while revealing an elegant mineral backbone evoking flint.

    Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs wonderfully with seafood, pan-seared scallops or grilled sea bass. It also perfectly accompanies poultry in cream and mushroom sauce, as well as cheeses such as Saint-Félicien, Brie or Crottin de Chavignol.

    Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Saint-Véran Village 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 13°C. This wine offers immediate drinking pleasure but can also be cellared to be enjoyed until around 2028.

The authentic expression of the Saint-Véran terroir by Maison Joseph Drouhin

    The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, France, Maison Joseph Drouhin has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy. Now led by Frédéric Drouhin, representing the fourth generation, the family carries on an ancestral know-how across an estate spanning around a hundred hectares. A pioneer in environmental approach, the estate has applied the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture for many years. Driven by the desire to offer natural responses to the challenges of the vine, Maison Joseph Drouhin crafts wines that faithfully express the diversity and richness of Burgundy's terroirs.

    The vineyard

Located in the southern part of the Mâconnais, the vineyard of the Saint-Véran appellation rests on complex soils composed of Jurassic limestone, grey marl and flint clay. Benefiting from a continental climate with moderate oceanic influences, the vines are planted at high density to encourage deep rooting. This demanding approach, combined with controlled yields, allows the grapes to draw out all the minerality of the terroir. The fruit destined for this cuvée comes notably from the lands of Château de Chasselas, a recent acquisition by the estate.

    The vintage

The year 2023 stands out as one of the hottest and driest in the region's recent history. This exceptional sunshine throughout the growing cycle allowed the berries to reach perfect ripeness. The harvest thus revealed grapes with remarkable aromatic concentration and optimal sugar richness, while retaining the freshness essential to the wine's balance.

    Winemaking and aging

The grapes are carefully harvested before being gently pressed using a pneumatic press. Fermentation of the Saint-Véran Village 2023 takes place two-thirds in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the aromas, while the remaining third ferments in 500-liter oak barrels. The wine then undergoes six to ten months of aging, guided by regular tastings to respect the identity of the terroir.

    Grape variety

    100% Chardonnay.
