The second wine of La Connivence and a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 La Belle Connivence is a pretty, elegant 2016 that shows the quality and style of the vintage beautifully. Loads of berry fruits and floral notes, medium body, a silky, layered texture, and terrific purity all make for an outstanding Pomerol to drink over the coming 15 years or so. It’s another solid second wine, and I suspect it will be a terrific value for readers.

    Description

The vivacity and structure of a Pomerol red wine

    The property

The story of the Château La Connivence is above all a story of friendship with three wine-loving friends who decide to create a very good wine. The superb Pomerol appellation then becomes the cradle of this connivance that unites the three owners: Johan Micoud, former international footballer, Matthieu Chalmé, former player for the Girondins de Bordeaux and Alexandre de Malet Roquefort, owner of the Château La Gaffelière in Saint-Émilion.

    The vineyard

A garden vineyard, Château La Connivence is a real little gem: 1.40 hectares located on a very large terroir of Pomerol, emblematic land of merlot, the flagship grape variety that covers 65% of the estate's land. The château has also chosen to plant cabernet franc, which represents 35% of the vineyard. On this gravel terroir combining fat gravels, fine gravels and clayey sandy soils, the 3 friends immediately sense that the perfect conditions are in place to be able to produce a very great Pomerol red wine. In order to preserve this precious terroir, the vines are exclusively worked by hand and managed using sustainable agriculture.

    The vintage

The 2016 vintage was marked by a rainy spring followed by a dry summer, but optimal conditions in September allowed to overcome the climatic challenges. Thanks to careful work by the teams, the harvest was able to take place at the optimal date, allowing perfect maturation of the tannins.

    Vinification and aging

Vinification in small stainless steel vats of a truncated shape within a new winery. Aging from 12 to 18 months in 100% new barrels.

    Blend

Merlot (60%) and cabernet franc (40%).
