    Wine Spectator

    James Molesworth

Juicy and direct, showing a solid core of crushed red and black currant fruit mixed with tobacco, bay leaf, pepper and singed alder notes. The finish is carried by a nice iron streak, which adds focus and cut. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2023 through 2033. 6,587 cases made.

    James Suckling

Blackberries, dried herbs, wet earth, graphite and tar on the nose. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Classically styled and fresh. Drink after 2024.

    Antonio Galloni

The 2019 Les Griffons de Pichon-Baron was captivating en primeur. It is every bit as impressive today. A Pauillac of substance and depth, Les Griffons is super-expressive. It offers an exotic mélange of dark fruit, licorice, smoke and tobacco, with strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections that lend savory aromatic presence. The long, persistent finish is exceptionally beautiful.

The second wine of this great estate, the 2019 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is a more Merlot-dominated release and is 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Sauvignon that saw 40% new oak. It has a gorgeous nose of ripe blackcurrant and darker cherry fruits as well as tobacco, smoked herbs, violets, and freshly sharpened pencils. Vibrant, pure, and complex aromatically, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, has the vintage's pure, elegant character, terrific depth on the mid-palate, and outstanding length. It's a wonderful, already approachable Pauillac that will deliver the goods over the coming 20+ years.

59% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep purple, dense at the core. Delicate scent of ripe morello cherries, followed by noble cassis spice and light tobacco. On the powerful palate, a tight-knit tannic framework and sandy extract; the supporting verve lends the Pauillac elegance. Focused finish with dark-berry contours and subtle, slightly grippy notes. Cannot match last year’s level!

    André Kunz

Velvety, dark, fruity bouquet with cassis, black blackberries, dark chocolate, fine woods, delicate dried-fruit notes. Powerful, creamy palate with dark, sweet fruit, a velvety, finely muscular structure, fine tannins, intense aromatics, and a long, full finish with sweet after-notes. 17/20 2024 - 2040

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, made from 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up uncomplicated scents of redcurrants and baked plums with touches of lavender and Ceylon tea. The medium-bodied palate is bright, crunchy, and lively, with a well-balanced finish.

An alluring nose of tobacco, cedar, and crisp red fruits. Silky and sumptuous on the palate, with notes of fresh coffee on a smooth, seductive finish.

    Yves Beck

Griffon reveals itself with authenticity through nuances of graphite, black berries, and licorice. Silky on the palate, it is elegant and already very approachable, while endowed with supportive, promising tannins. What a beautiful way to invite discovery of the great wines of this magnificent estate.

Logo on the cork: inverted T (Trescases) Beautiful dark, purple hue. Highly aromatic nose, delicate, fruity, and subtle. Delicate on entry, becoming very finely fleshy as it develops, very aromatic at mid-palate; the wine gains flavor from the mid-palate to the finish, with a sanguine note in its overall expression. It all concludes without a trace of tannin. Lovely finish with fine grain.

    Decanter

Blackcurrant florality on a nose of ripe fruit. Expressive. This has grippy, bramble-fruit tannins that don’t overwhelm, giving dark fruit the foreground, aided by liquorice and coffee. It has juiciness but also a sombre tone.

This is the second wine of Pichon Baron. Its juicy richness echoes the top wine of the estate with its structure and powerful fruits. The texture though has a lightness that means it will mature relatively quickly. Drink from 2026.

    Description

The precision and richness of a Pauillac Second Wine

    The estate

Château Pichon Baron, Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is one of the Grand Cru elite of Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

    The vineyard

A véritable mosaic of terroirs, superbly placed near the Gironde estuary, the Château Pichon Baron vineyard extends over 73 hectares of vines planted on on perfectly drained Médoc gravel soils. The estate’s oldest vines are used to develop this emblematic Pauillac wine.

    The wine

Produced since the 2012 vintage, Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the Château Pichon Baron’s Second Wine.

    The vintage

Although the mildness of the winter advanced an early budburst in the vineyard, a cool and rainy spring brought an uneven flowering. Summer was hot and dry, with scattered rains at the end of July-beginning of August, and at the end of September. The harvested grapes had a perfect concentration of sugar, unveiling fine tannins and a low acidity.

    Winemaking and ageing

Ageing for 18 months in barrels (60% new, 40% of one wine).

    Blend

    Merlot (59%)
    Cabernet Sauvignon (41%).
