The 2021 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron reveals aromas of minty cassis, berries and pencil shavings, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, supple and seamless palate built around lively acids and fine, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish.

Sleek and fresh, with red and black currant puree notes, dotted with violet and anise accents and supported by a bright iron edge through the finish. Nicely done for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2035. 3,986 cases made.

Gorgeous Cabernet nuances on the nose: green pepper, fragrant violets, herbal notes and eucalyptus. Appealing sensuality, this is sparky with bite – it’s high‑toned, a touch sour but with hints of stone and spice. Lovely freshness and purity and also ripe tannins; there’s a chew that fills the mouth, with sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit accented by clove, vanilla and cola. Lots of nuance and power with abundant freshness. Made from 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot from gravel parcels near the estuary, better suited to Cabernet.

This firm and racy cabernet-based red shows violet and rose-petal aromas and attractive currants. Medium-bodied, it’s juicy at the end. Needs three or four years to open. Best after 2027.

The 2021 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron, which contains a little more Petit Verdot than previous vintages and matured in 40% new oak, has a focused, floral bouquet, its dried iris flower notes marrying well with the vibrant black fruit. An underlying sense of classicism surfaces with aeration. The palate is surprisingly fleshy and silky smooth on the entry, a little richer than expected, though it gains more finesse toward the finish. This Les Griffons is a “grower”—charming after 10 minutes in the glass, and it should age well in bottle.

Flowers, spice box, smoke, tobacco leaf and red berries already show on the nose and on the palate. Soft, spicy, fresh and crisp, the sweet, ripe red fruits have a satisfying crunch, enhanced by a peppery edge. The finish lingers with a vibrant, spicy presence. The wine blends 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2025-2040.

Dark ruby core, purple reflections, broad bright rim. Delicate aromas of ripe plums, candied orange zest and notes of tobacco. Juicy palate with a fine fruit sweetness, silky tannins, fresh acidity and a mineral-salty finish. Versatile with food.

Slightly more Cabernet Sauvignon–dominated, the 2021 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is based on 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has a terrific blue-fruit character as well as textbook Pauillac notes of scorched earth, graphite, and a touch of violets. With medium-bodied richness, an elegant mouthfeel, and quality tannins, it's an impeccably made 2021 that's worth seeking out and cellaring for upwards of a decade.

Lovely depth and grip through the palate, ruby in colour with violet edging. There is an austerity to the tannins, but also juiciness and a sense of momentum. Attractive, if austere. 40% new oak, from September 24 to October 7.

It charges out with bold notes of cassis and juicy blackberries, giving way to suggestions of wild sage, pencil shavings, and black olives. The light to medium-bodied palate is vibrant and energetic, with fine-grained tannins and a black berry laced finish.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron sets the tone from the very first aromas. It is precise, subtle, and reveals many facets.
