Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Clos Prieur" 2023 by Marc Roy
Tasting notes
Appearance
This wine displays a deep, dark red colour with ruby and violet highlights in its youth, while retaining a lovely brilliance and great clarity.
Nose
The bouquet is intense and remarkably pure. It expresses aromas of ripe dark fruits such as blackcurrant and wild blackberry, complemented by floral notes of violet. The whole is enhanced by sweet spices, Sichuan pepper and a delicate, perfectly integrated smoky touch.
Palate
The texture is ample and dense, perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness. The tannins are both firm and silky. The finish lingers at length, delivering a velvety harmony supported by a fine mineral and saline backbone.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with fine cuts of roasted or grilled red meat, such as a rib of beef or a roast. It also elevates noble poultry and feathered game, such as a pigeon supreme served with a reduced jus, as well as mature washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses.
Serving and cellaring
We recommend serving this wine between 16 and 18°C in a wide-bowled Burgundy glass. Decanting for 30 to 60 minutes is advised in its youth to release its aromas. This Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Clos Prieur" 2023 can be enjoyed now and will evolve favourably until around 2036.
The profound and elegant expression of a Gevrey-Chambertin terroir
The estate
Located in France, in the heart of Burgundy, the Marc Roy estate is a small, family-run property of approximately four hectares. Shaped by Marc Roy from his father's vines, the estate has been run since 2003 by Alexandrine Roy, representing the fourth generation. Working exclusively with village-level appellations, the winemaker crafts wines of remarkable precision, often compared to prestigious crus. This international recognition is built on a minimalist approach in the cellar and the preservation of an exceptional heritage of old vines.
The vineyard
The "Clos Prieur" climat enjoys a strategic location, immediately below the Mazis-Chambertin grand cru. Facing south-east, the vines benefit from ideal morning sunshine on stony slopes. The terroir rests on clay-limestone and marl soils, rich in iron and deep limestone. This Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard is made up of very old vines with an average age of 70 years. The estate practises viticulture that respects living ecosystems, including regular ploughing to encourage deep rooting and naturally limit yields.
The vintage
The 2023 growing year began with a mild spring, favouring regular flowering and fruit set. This period was followed by a hot, dry summer. These clement weather conditions, without extreme heat at véraison, allowed for perfectly even ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and ageing
The harvest is entirely by hand, followed by rigorous sorting to keep only the healthiest berries. The grapes are 100% destemmed before a cold pre-fermentation maceration in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation starts with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by gentle extraction through alternating punching down and pumping over. Finally, this wine is aged in French oak barrels, around 50% of which are new, for a period of 11 to 18 months.
