The Vibrant Expression of a Great Toscana Wine by Masseto
The Estate
Founded in 1987, the Masseto estate quickly established itself as an unmissable reference in Tuscany. Located on the Tyrrhenian coast, this approximately seven-hectare property benefits from an exceptional terroir. Now run by the Frescobaldi family, its current owner, the estate continues to uphold a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing nature to express itself. With the arrival of Marco Balsimelli as technical director, this renowned name continues to produce wines of remarkable precision, combining power and elegance at the heart of the appellation.
The Vineyard
Located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno, this exceptional terroir enjoys a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes. The vines grow on a distinctive hillside composed of deep blue clay dating back to the Pliocene era. This compact soil places natural stress on the vine, encouraging optimal berry concentration while preserving lovely freshness thanks to the maritime influence.
The Vintage
The year benefited from very mild weather conditions. The early months brought mild temperatures accompanied by regular rainfall, allowing excellent water reserves to build up. The vines showed strong vigour as a result, requiring meticulous canopy management. From the end of June, warmer weather set in, ensuring ideal ripening of the grapes. Finally, a slight drop in temperatures from mid-August onwards gave this IGT Toscana wine a perfect balance between acidity, concentration and aromatic richness.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for this Massetino 2024 were harvested by hand, plot by plot, between late August and mid-September, using small fifteen-kilo crates. After gentle destemming and pressing, the berries are transferred by gravity into concrete vessels, without the use of pumps. Each lot is vinified separately at temperatures maintained between 25 and 28°C. Maceration lasts on average 21 to 25 days, with gentle extractions and daily pump-overs. Following a classic malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for twelve months in oak barrels, half of which are new. The final blend then rests for around four months in concrete tanks before bottling.
