This red combines bright cherry and raspberry flavors with savory elements of eucalyptus, earth, tar and tobacco. Though dense, this has a fluid feel as it builds to a long fruity, earthy and licorice aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 350 cases made, 70 cases imported.

Very beautiful and balanced Asili with ultra-fine tannins that give a refined texture to the wine across the palate. Medium body with juicy berry, nutmeg, hazelnut and bark flavors that are subtle and appealing. So drinkable now, but can improve with age.

Barbaresco. Maturing ruby with orange tinges. A ripe, sweet red-fruit nose that is already a little developed and with spicy touches from what looks like oak. Like a really late harvest. Rich and attractive on the palate but a little too easy-going for this top-class vineyard. (WS)

The 2019 Barbaresco Asili is a pretty rich, heady wine. Black cherry, spice, leather and chocolate bring out the darker side of Asili. There's certainly plenty of richness. The Chiarlo Asili ultimately favors power and density over finesse. It's not my favorite style of Asili, but all the elements are nicely balanced just the same.

The touch and structure of a great wine from Piedmont

    The property

The fame of the eponymous estate Michele Chiarlo has been written since 1956, when this oenologist decided to create his own estate and produce great wines from Piedmont. His ambition? To enhance the terroirs and grape varieties of Piedmont and reveal their own personality through a constant quest for excellence and a tailor-made vinification. Located in the village of Calamandrana, within the Barolo appellation, the Michele Chiarlo estate produces wines recognized for their inimitable style, harmoniously combining aromatic complexity with supple and silky tannins.

    The vineyard

The Michele Chiarlo estate watches over a mosaic of vineyards spread over 110 hectares, constituting a real treasure of the Langhe, in the north of Italy.

    The wine

Produced since 1996, the Barbaresco Asili from Michele Chiarlo is made from a vineyard of about 1 hectare, facing southwest. Averaging 30 years old, the vines are planted on soils composed of limestone marls with a low presence of clay. Poor in organic matter, this terroir is rich in magnesium and calcium.

    Vinification and aging

Vinification with maceration of 17 to 18 days in oak vats, followed by malolactic fermentation. Aging for 18 months in oak barrels then refining in bottle for at least 2 years.

    Blend

    Nebbiolo (100%).
