This is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc. This is the first vintage where 100% of the fruit for this vintage came from Morlet’s new “Coeur de Vallee” vineyard in Oakville—just across the road from To Kalon. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Coeur de Vallee opens with wonderfully pure notions of crushed blackberries, wild blueberries and black cherries with hints of black currant cordial, Chinese five spice, candied violets and licorice, plus a touch of garrigue. Full-bodied, the voluptuously fruited palate offers layers of black and blue fruits with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory. 245 cases were made.

Offers textbook AVA notes of menthol, bay leaf and warm loam, mixed with a lush wave of dark currant and plum fruit flavors. The long finish pulls everything together steadily and assuredly, set against a smoldering alder backdrop. Best from 2022 through 2034. 300 cases made.

Such a delicious wine from Luc Morlet, the first vintage to use entirely estate-grown fruit. Caramel, toasted edges, fragrant and highly scented, perfumed with toasted notes. Strawberries, ripe and fragrant. Liquorice, graphite and blueberries — the nose is really quite compelling. Subtle and so seductive in a quiet way. Really gentle and light on its feet. There’s concentration and complexity, but it has shed its baby fat and any pent-up power, and has started to relax and give lots of enjoyment. Long, but not too much — it’s graceful and effortless. The texture is incredible — a touch of crispness, flesh and grip, with some warming spice and heat towards the finish too. Leave to air and enjoy. Starting to really hit its stride but will continue to age beautifully. It’s fiery but delivered so excellently. A gourmet wine, have it with food on a cold winter’s night.

    Description

The smoothness and balance of a Californian red wine

    The estate

Created in 2006 by the Franco-American duo Luc and Jodie Morlet, Morlet Family Vineyards showcases the exceptional terroirs of Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Coming from a lineage of Champagne winemakers spanning five generations, Luc Morlet, who graduated in oenology in Reims, perfected his craft at Château Dauzac in Margaux before settling in California with Jodie. Together, they first established vineyards dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, then extended their expertise to other grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Acclaimed by international critics, the estate's wines enjoy unanimous recognition.

    The vineyard

The "Coeur de Vallée" vineyard, located in the prestigious Oakville appellation in the center of Napa Valley, is crossed by the To Kalon creek. Planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it sits on well-draining alluvial soil, rich in gravel (40 to 60%), shaped by the Mayacamas mountain range. This unique terroir, enhanced by the nobility of neighboring estates, produces a wine crafted with respect for traditional methods, proudly bearing the name of its origin: "Coeur de Vallée".

    Vinification and aging

Harvested manually at night to preserve their freshness, the grapes are sorted with extreme care. Refrigerated then 100% destemmed, the berries undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts, then the wine is aged 16 months in French oak barrels. Bottling takes place without fining or filtration.

    Blend

Coeur de Vallée Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 from Morlet is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (97%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).
