    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Redoma Tinto 2022 Niepoort

    Tasting

    Color
The color reveals a deep ruby hue, adorned with concentrated violet highlights, offering beautiful, brilliant and airy clarity.

    Nose
Delicate and complex, the bouquet opens with intense aromas of fresh black fruits and balsamic herbaceous touches. With aeration, it reveals notes of tart red fruits such as morello cherry and wild raspberry, enhanced by floral nuances of violet and peony. A smoky minerality blends with hints of graphite, white pepper, fine leather and aromatic herbs.

    Palate
The palate stands out with a tannic structure of great finesse, almost chalky. The balance is remarkable between vibrant freshness, natural acidity and vivid fruitiness. The silky, airy texture rests on a slightly saline mineral frame, leading to a long, refined finish with notes of sweet spices and warm stone.

    Food and wine pairing

This Portuguese red wine pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes, pepper steak, grilled red meats or game. It also elegantly accompanies lamb tagine with prunes, duck breast or mushroom-based dishes.

The elegance and minerality of a red wine from the Douro Valley

    The estate

Founded in Portugal in 1842 by the Dutch merchant Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the Niepoort house is a true family institution. Historically known for its blended Ports, the estate underwent a major turning point with the arrival of Dirk Niepoort in 1987. The current owner and representative of the fifth generation, he transformed the estate by becoming a winemaker and pioneer of dry wines in the Duriense region. Today supported by the sixth generation, he continues a philosophy of minimal intervention, combining respect for tradition with constant innovation to express the full richness of the local terroirs.

    The vineyard

Located in the Cima Corgo sub-region, at the heart of the Douro Valley, the vineyard spreads across steep terraces with soils composed of friable schist, microschist and granite. The plots, oriented mainly to the north and perched at altitudes ranging from 150 to 500 meters, benefit from a climate conducive to preserving freshness. The vines, aged between 60 and 70 years, are planted in traditional co-planting with a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. The estate favors sustainable viticulture, incorporating biodynamic practices and deliberately limited yields to promote biodiversity.

    The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by extreme weather conditions, making it the driest of the century. The growing cycle had to contend with strong climatic variability, alternating between intense heat waves and sudden rain events. These factors led to very rapid ripening, triggering the earliest harvest ever recorded on the estate, beginning in the first days of August.

    Winemaking and aging

For the Redoma Tinto 2022 cuvée, whole clusters were kept and placed in stainless steel lagares. A short maceration was carried out with mechanical punching down to preserve the delicacy of the berries. Fermentation then took place in these same vats, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for approximately 22 months in old French oak foudres before being bottled in June 2024.

    Grape varieties

This wine comes from a traditional blend of old vines including the grape varieties Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Rufete, Tinto Cão and Touriga Nacional.
