An exceptional Spanish red wine from Palacios Remondo in Rioja
The estate
Palacios Remondo was founded in 1945 in Alfaro, in the heart of Rioja, when José Palacios Remondo established this family estate on the slopes of Monte Yerga. Since 2000, the estate has been run by Álvaro Palacios, already renowned for his work in Priorat and Bierzo, who has made it a flagship for Garnacha in Rioja Oriental. Farmed according to organic principles, this Spanish estate covers around a hundred hectares and is deeply committed to traditional grape varieties, combining an uncompromising pursuit of quality with respect for terroir.
The vineyard
This wine comes from a single 3-hectare plot owned by the estate, located on the slopes of Monte Yerga in Alfaro, in Rioja. Set at an altitude of 616 metres, the vineyard enjoys a south-easterly aspect and a gentle 5% slope, with a Mediterranean climate tempered by Atlantic influences and marked by wide temperature variations. The shallow soils (20 cm) lie on a Quaternary limestone bedrock mixed with colluvium of volcanic origin, quartz and sandstone, covered with clay, sand and silt, with a poor, cold, limestone-rich horizon. The 38-year-old, dry-farmed bush vines are tended according to the traditional methods of Alfaro and are certified organic, with a planting density of 1.70 x 1.70 m and yields deliberately limited to 12 hl/ha, complemented by green harvesting and a rigorously selective hand harvest.
The vintage
The estate rated the 2024 vintage as "good", confirming a generally favourable year for the ripening of Garnacha on the slopes of Monte Yerga. The harvest took place on 12 October 2024, following a rigorous manual selection of the grapes intended for this cuvée.
Vinification and ageing
To produce Quiñón de Valmira 2024, the grapes are vinified using a combination of whole bunches and destemmed berries, followed by alcoholic fermentation in wooden vats with indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasts around 37.5 days, while malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously in barrel. The wine is then aged for 13 months in foudres, without fining, cold stabilisation or filtration, in order to preserve the authenticity of the fruit and the wine's natural texture as fully as possible.
Grape varieties
This wine is made from 85% Garnacha, complemented by 15% other traditional local varieties from Rioja.
