Characteristics and tasting tips for Grange 2022 by Penfolds

    Tasting

    Colour
This wine reveals a particularly deep, intense colour, highlighted by subtle red glints at the rim of the glass.

    Nose
The bouquet is generous and remarkably deep. It exudes aromas of black cherry, chinotto and bitter chocolate, interwoven with smoky, ferrous and sanguine touches. Hints of spice, polished leather and toasty notes reflect a pronounced oak ageing.

    Palate
The attack is broad, revealing a dense and powerful structure. The texture is rich, coating the palate with flavours of walnut, leather, cocoa and black fruit. The whole is supported by smooth, perfectly integrated tannins, leading to a finish of remarkable length.

    Food and wine pairings
This exceptional cuvée will elevate full-flavoured red meats, such as a fine cut of dry-aged beef, herb-grilled lamb chops or game dishes in sauce. It will also pair beautifully with slow-braised meats or aged hard cheeses.

    Serving and cellaring
Decanting Grange 2022 before serving is highly recommended to unlock its full complexity. Built to last for decades, this great wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2075.

An Australian icon from Southern Australia with masterfully controlled power

    The estate
Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary at Magill Estate, near Adelaide, Penfolds has become a true winemaking icon. Now owned by Treasury Wine Estates and led by Sam Fischer, this renowned brand enjoys international acclaim. Under the guidance of chief winemaker Peter Gago, the estate upholds a unique philosophy based on blending fruit from different terroirs across Southern Australia, producing wines of exceptional consistency and quality that have forged its legendary reputation worldwide.

    The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from a rigorous selection of several iconic terroirs in South Australia. The plots are located mainly in the renowned regions of the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, offering a geographical diversity that contributes to the wine's complexity.

    The vintage
The 2022 vintage in Australia benefited from a generally mild climate. Winter brought abundant rainfall, thoroughly replenishing soil water reserves. Spring proved more unpredictable, marked by persistent winds, mild temperatures and some hail in late October, which reduced yields. Summer then unfolded under favourable conditions, with no excessive heatwaves, allowing the small berries to ripen slowly, evenly and harmoniously right up to harvest.

    Winemaking and ageing
After each parcel is fermented separately, the Grange 2022 blend undergoes extended ageing. The wine rests for 18 months exclusively in brand-new American oak barrels, a traditional method that shapes its structure and distinctive aromatic profile.

    Grape varieties
This blend is made up of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.
