    Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Barbera d'Alba 2024 Pio Cesare

    Tasting notes

    Colour
The colour reveals an intense, deep ruby red hue, which will develop subtle garnet nuances as it evolves.

    Nose
The nose reveals an expressive bouquet dominated by aromas of red and black fruits such as blackberry, morello cherry and plum, enhanced by floral notes of violet and hints of herbaceousness. Ageing in oak brings delicate spicy nuances of cinnamon and vanilla, along with scents of blond tobacco and leather.

    Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a lovely balance between generous fruit richness and freshness carried by pronounced acidity. The tannins are moderate, velvety and particularly refined, leading to a persistent and dynamic finish.

    Food and wine pairing

Thanks to its lovely acidity, this red wine pairs wonderfully with rich dishes such as pasta in sauce (tomato or meat ragù), grilled or roasted meats, as well as recipes based on mushrooms or truffles. It will also perfectly accompany a charcuterie board, aged cheeses such as Parmesan, or dishes with Asian influences.

    Service and storage

With genuine ageing potential thanks to its structure and acidity, this Barbera d'Alba 2024 will evolve favourably in the bottle over the years.

    Other characteristics

This wine has a minimum alcohol content of 14%.

The authentic expression of a Piedmont terroir by Pio Cesare

    The estate

Founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, the Pio Cesare estate is a historic institution located in the heart of Alba, in Piedmont, Italy. Built on ancient Roman walls, this family-owned property cultivates approximately 80 hectares of vineyards of its own. Now led by the fifth generation embodied by Federica Boffa Pio, the estate continues a philosophy centred on sustainable viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking. Renowned worldwide for the quality of its production and its respect for tradition, the estate stands out for its commitment to blending different terroirs to express the full complexity of its region.

    The vineyard

The grapes used to produce this Barbera d'Alba come from several family plots spread across prestigious villages such as Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba and Diano d'Alba. This geographical diversity allows the estate to draw on a wide variety of soils, ranging from limestone, clay and marl to sandier, alluvial plots. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable farming practices, without chemical fertilisers or synthetic pesticides, favouring biodiversity and controlled yields.

    The vintage

This vintage holds particular symbolic significance for the estate, as it marks the very first growing and production cycle fully overseen by Federica Boffa Pio, representing a new milestone in the continuity of the family's expertise.

    Winemaking and ageing

The making of the Barbera d'Alba 2024 is based on a minimal-intervention approach. Fermentation and skin maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 15 to 18 days. After careful blending of the different plots, the wine undergoes ageing in wood for a total of 18 months. About 70% of the volume ages in large, neutral French oak foudres, while the remaining 30% rests in medium-toast barrels (half new, half previously used for one wine). The ageing process concludes with extended bottle ageing.
