    Vinous

    Neal Martin

The 2019 Roc de Cambes has retained an attractive Japanese nori scent that combines beautifully with the layered black fruit. The palate is very well balanced, poised and spicy, and fresh as a daisy, with fine concentration and a gourmand-like finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a fantastic Roc de Cambes.

Full-bodied, concentrated, earthy and cherry-filled with an herbal nuance and complexity, the wine is lively, wild and fruity with forest floor and fresh red fruits in the finish. 90-92 Pts

    The Wine Independent

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Roc de Cambes is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Cedar and charcoal notes give way to vague notions of juicy plums and baked blackberries with a waft of bay leaves. The full-bodied palate has a solid structure of chewy oak tannins, with plenty of fruit to back it up and a spicy lift on the finish.

    Terre de Vins

François Mitjavile’s haute couture Côtes-de-Bourg. The winemaker’s “signature” is evident: impeccably ripe fruit without excess, great softness in the texture, subtle senescent and meaty notes, all lifted by lovely freshness. Subtle, complex, and above all very flavorful, it asserts its singular class.

    Description

The aromatic expression and structure of a Côtes de Bourg wine

    The estate

Perched on the first hillside front of Côtes de Bourg, facing the estuary, Roc de Cambes forms an amphitheater of slopes around a medieval 14th-century cellar. The light, softened by the Gironde, has long guaranteed regular photosynthesis and fruit of remarkable precision. In 1988, François Mitjavile recognized the clear potential of a great terroir: unable to expand in Saint-Émilion after Tertre Roteboeuf, he chose these slopes with their protective microclimate, where frost, hail, and sudden temperature variations are rare. The first vinification that same year remains a defining moment: facing the vat after maceration was complete, he tasted the wine while contemplating the hills and already discovered the aromatic landscape unique to the place.

    The vineyard

The estate covers about ten hectares in Côtes de Bourg, predominantly planted with Merlot (80–85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15–20%), with a historic presence of Malbec. Vines mostly 40 to 50 years old, which accumulate the experience of vintages and concentrate the essence of time. On slopes of heavy clay and limestone, excess water drains away, the rock supports the vine during dry periods, cold air flows down to the plain, and hail is less severe: all assets that promote the longevity of the vines.

    Winemaking and aging

An approach faithful to the spirit of the place: fermentation in concrete tanks, malolactic in French oak barrels, followed by patient aging of 18 to 24 months, with approximately 50% new wood.

    Grape varieties

This Roc de Cambes 2019 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec.
