The elegance and complexity of a great Barolo from Sandrone Luciano
The estate
Officially founded in 1978, the Sandrone Luciano brand is a leading name in Piedmont. Located in the heart of the Barolo appellation, the estate now covers 27 hectares spread across the Langhe and the Roero. Long renowned for an approach that skilfully blends tradition and modernity, the estate has specialised in showcasing Nebbiolo. Following the passing of its founder in 2023, stylistic and technical continuity has been brilliantly maintained by the current generation, with Luca Sandrone as technical director and Barbara Sandrone managing the estate.
The vineyard
The grapes come from five distinct terroirs located in several villages within the Barolo appellation: Vignane, Merli, Baudana, Villero and Le Coste di Monforte. This diversity of altitudes, exposures and soils, combining marl, sand and limestone, brings great complexity. The vineyard is farmed with a respectful approach, favouring minimal intervention focused on disease prevention in order to preserve the natural balance of the vines.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage stood out for the remarkable resilience of the vines in the face of drought. After a dry autumn and the first snowfalls in early December, the winter was mild. Spring began with a classic budburst, followed by abundant rainfall. The season then continued under hot, dry conditions, fortunately tempered by cool nights. These conditions accelerated ripening, allowing an early harvest between late September and early October, yielding healthy, slightly smaller berries with an excellent balance between fruit and acidity.
Vinification and ageing
The making of this wine is based on the separate vinification of each plot. Fermentations take place spontaneously, triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts, in open steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in 500-litre French oak barrels. The final blend of the different terroirs is only assembled at the end of this period. Finally, this Italian wine undergoes a further 18 months of bottle ageing before release.
