Decanter

Prominent ripe black fruit aromas with just a hint of liquorice spice, exotic black tea and a burst of limestone minerality – notably more than the Les Vergelesses further down the slope. The texture is firmer, tannic and rich. The overall impression is one of vitality and youth. The grapes are from a parcel of almost 4ha in one block, with 1.2ha planted to white. There are a range of planting dates, but the blend of old and young vines has delivered a marvellous result. Biodynamic.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2023 Chandon de Briailles

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep purple hue with garnet reflections, offering a visual that is both brilliant and clear.

Nose
Showing great finesse, the aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, strawberry and redcurrant. It then gains complexity with subtle floral touches reminiscent of violet, mingled with spicy and mineral nuances.

Palate
The attack on the palate stands out for its freshness and vivacity. The structure is precise, carried by firm yet silky-textured tannins. Showing lovely persistence, the finish lingers at length, revealing delicate notes of nutmeg and spice upon aeration.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or braised feathered game, such as duck, pheasant or quail, served with autumn vegetables. It also enhances poultry in mushroom sauce, fine cured meats and well-aged, characterful cheeses.

Service and Storage

This Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2023 will reveal its full potential after a few years in the cellar. It can be enjoyed at its best between approximately 2026 and 2033, or even beyond for lovers of older vintages.

The Authentic, Mineral Expression of a Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru

The Estate

Located in France, in the Burgundy region north of Beaune, the Chandon de Briailles estate was founded in 1834 by Countess Chandon de Briailles and Pierre Guillemot. Today, the property belongs to Count and Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolay, while management is handled by their children, Claude and François. Spanning 13.7 hectares, this historic estate stands out for its deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture and the use of horse-drawn ploughing, reflecting a desire to preserve the pure expression of its terroirs.

The Vineyard

The plot of roughly three hectares that gives rise to this Pernand-Vergelesses is located in the southern part of the appellation. The vines, averaging forty years of age, benefit from a north-east exposure and an elevated position that favours freshness. The terroir is composed of predominantly clay soils, rich in iron and limestone elements. The whole vineyard is cultivated according to biodynamic principles, with soil work carried out using horses.

The Vintage

2023 proved highly favourable for the growing cycle, offering a fine balance between ripeness and freshness. Heatwaves at the end of August and beginning of September called for rigorous sorting during the harvest, so that only the healthiest berries of optimal quality were retained.

Winemaking and Aging

For this Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2023, the grapes are mostly destemmed before fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. Extraction is carried out gently through daily pumping-over followed by manual punching-down, with a maceration period of fifteen to twenty days. The wine is then aged for fourteen to eighteen months in thirteenth-century historic cellars, in oak barrels with no more than 10% new wood. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
