Vinum

Of particular class, tannins sculpted like polished granite, great tension and length on red berry notes, excellent, with style and character.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

92–94. Barrel Sample. Dense tannins mark this wine, partnered with black fruit flavors and woody tones. The palate exhibits a good balance between the excellent acidity and a ripe, full structure, finishing fresh.

Decanter

The tannic frame is still tightly held together at this stage, and on the finish there is a punch of impact. It will take its time - the fruit is hiding right now, but it's clearly in there, waiting its turn. This is more austere than some in Margaux, and bedding down for long ageing. 90% new oak.

James Suckling

This is quite a seriously structured wine for a Margaux and it needs until at least 2020 for the strident tannins, crisp acidity and generous black fruit to marry fully. The typical long, clean finish of the vintage for this appellation comes through.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2015 Boyd-Cantenac offers attractive raspberry and wild strawberry on the nose, the oak nicely integrated and hints of rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and punchy red berry fruit laced with brown spices and graphite, leading to a cohesive finish with good density and length. One of the hidden gems from the appellation this year. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

Sweet fresh, fruits, floral accents, freshness and a medium bodied, polished, silky, inviting blackberry and cassis finish. 90 - 92 Pts

Deep ruby with purple reflections and subtle rim brightening. Delicate toasty aromas, hints of nougat and black berry fruit, candied orange zest. Juicy and elegant, ripe cherry fruit, fine integrated tannins, sweet finish, already accessible, will benefit from bottle age.

Broad, peppery bouquet, blackberries, rubber, wood. Robust, dry palate with angular structure, light aromatics, sandy tannin, bitter finish. 16/20 2022 - 2034

A warm vintage, and there is clear spice on the Nose. None of these so far need to be decanted particularly, or perhaps for an hour at most - the nature of this wine is that it is fairly accessible young, even in big vintages like 2015, but here you definitely feel the most depth and supple rich texture to the tannins. Enjoyable cocoa bean, vanilla, grilled oak but it is well balanced by the autumnal fruit. Lucien Guillemet owner and winemaker. No external consultant. 90% new oak for ageing, harvest September 28 to October 20.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2015 Boyd-Cantenac needs a little coaxing to reveal faint notes of black plum preserves, blackberry pie, and cassis, plus suggestions of spice box and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is chewy with a slight dip in the mid-palate, finishing earthy.

Bettane+Desseauve

Full-bodied, precise nose, powerful, perfectly characteristic, firm tannins, a great wine worthy of its vintage. It will withstand many comparisons. A favourite.

La RVF

It plays the card of exuberance, with very round, very ripe, very expressive fruit. The wood wraps it nicely, but it's not quite integrated yet. A whole that will harmonise over time.

Le Figaro Vin

Purple colour. Blackcurrant nose. The wine is upright, long, fresh, elegant, classy, with beautiful varietal maturity, the finish is slightly austere, but with no vegetal notes in the tannins. A truly great Boyd, a major success. 81% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Beautiful dark and purple colour. Very aromatic nose, fine, fruity, truffle-scented, with a woody background. Smooth on the attack, juicy and even suave on the mid-palate, the wine develops with savoury notes of fruit and spices. It finishes long, with slightly woody tannins.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015

Tasting

Colour
This red wine displays an intense hue enhanced by deep purple highlights.

Nose
Remarkably expressive, the bouquet reveals aromas of fresh black fruit and jammy Bigarreau cherry. Delicate floral touches intertwine with notes of mocha and sweet spices from the oak ageing.

Palate
The attack is clean and opens onto a structure that is both powerful and perfectly balanced. The silky texture is supported by round, creamy tannins. The finish is impressively long and appealing, with flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry and spicy nuances.

Food and wine pairing

This fine wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a herb-crusted rack of lamb or a generous rib-eye steak. It also enhances refined game dishes such as venison fillet, poultry with mushrooms and hard cooked cheeses like Comté or Beaufort.

Serving and cellaring

For the best tasting experience, decant this wine one to two hours before serving, at an ideal temperature of around 16°C. With excellent ageing potential, this Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015 can be enjoyed until around 2035.

The elegance and complexity of a red wine from Margaux

The estate

Founded in 1754 by Jacques Boyd, Château Boyd-Cantenac is a Troisième Grand Cru Classé located in the renowned Bordeaux region. This 17-hectare estate stands out for a surprising historical feature: it has had no château building since 1929. Owned by the Guillemet family since 1932, it is now run by Lucien Guillemet and his nephew Olivier Salques. A pioneer at heart, the estate has followed organic principles for over forty years, producing wines that authentically express the full nobility of their terroir.

The vineyard

Located on the prestigious Cantenac plateau within the Margaux appellation, the vineyard lies on siliceous gravel soils dating from the Quaternary period. These poor, warm and perfectly free-draining soils force the vines, which average 38 years of age, to root deeply. The vineyard is managed with great respect for biodiversity, using organic compost and no chemical fertilisers whatsoever. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted so that only the healthiest berries are kept.

The vintage

2015 is recognised as an exceptional year for the Bordeaux Left Bank. The growing season unfolded very harmoniously, benefiting from ideal weather conditions for the ripening of the berries. The health of the vineyard was kept perfectly under control, allowing grapes of remarkable quality to be harvested.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes harvested to produce this Château Boyd-Cantenac 2015 are vinified plot by plot. Maceration lasts around twenty days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, in order to preserve aromatic freshness and gently extract the tannins. The wine is then aged for an extended period of 17 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 90% of which are new.

Grape varieties

This wine is made from a blend largely dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
