Decanter

One of the best Haut-Bages Libérals I've tasted from barreel. Perfumed blackcurrants, quite dark and true to form with a gorgeous perfume. Aromatics are great. Juicy and crisp, sleek and svelte, definitely quite streamlined but with such soft, velvety tannins that give grip but support the vibrant fruit so well. I love this. Really very classic, muscular but gentle with purity and focus. Hard to explain but this is great, maybe quite light and not layered enough, but there’s such complex flavours and aromas. And the acidity is excellent. A very friendly wine that will be easy to approach. Half gravelly soil, half limestone with 50% chalk on Cabernet – really rare for a cru classé. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.56pH. A yield of 32hl/ha.

Intense, gunsmoke and roses on the opening. The sense of acidity that is typical of the vintage is higher here than in Claire Lurton’s Margaux wines, but it is tempered by salinity, autumnal fruits and chalky tannins. Consultant: Eric Boissenot. pH 3.56, with the highest proportion of limestone in any vineyard in Pauillac. Harvest September 8 to 18. Yield 32 hl/ha. 35% new oak. pH 3.56.

Yves Beck

The bouquet of Haut-Bages Libéral is very fresh, with chalky notes, raspberry aromas and a touch of eucalyptus. Slightly creamy on the attack, the wine gains breadth and intensity as it develops. Its powerful tannins deliver precise drive and go hand in hand with the structure’s tension. A wine that combines character and finesse, which can already be enjoyed in its youth, while also offering excellent ageing potential.

Vinum

Fascinating, fresh, and deep on the nose; bright blackcurrant fruit defines the bouquet, joined by blood orange and subtle smoky nuances; on the palate, it is focused and very linear, with chalky tannins, freshness, a dancing lightness, and a juicy finish. A mineral-driven, vertical Haut-Bages-Libéral full of breed and precision.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2025

Tasting

Appearance
A ruby hue of remarkable depth, with an opaque core and subtle purple highlights.

Nose
The bouquet reveals a beautiful intensity centred on red fruits, enhanced by notes of chalk, mint, white pepper and a touch of blood orange.

Palate
The attack reveals a structure that is both vertical and mineral, driven by great energy and remarkable precision. The refined tannins accompany the tasting through to a saline finish.

Food and wine pairings
This great red wine will pair ideally with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a rack of lamb or a fine cut of beef. It will also wonderfully complement gourmet dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle.

Serving and cellaring
Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2025 is a wine that can be enjoyed from a young age for its brilliance, yet it also boasts an excellent capacity to age and develop favourably over time.

A great Pauillac cru with a mineral identity

The estate
Established in the 18th century, Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a prestigious estate in the Bordeaux region. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, it covers 30 hectares. Today, the property is run by Claire Villars-Lurton, who has profoundly transformed the estate into a true benchmark of environmental excellence. A pioneer, she has guided the vineyard towards biodynamics and agroecology. These virtuous practices help to enhance this unique terroir and produce wines of great purity.

The vineyard
Located within the prestigious Pauillac appellation, the vineyard extends over 30 hectares. It benefits from a mosaic of soils made up of clay-limestone gravels around the estate and deep gravels on the Bages plateau. Remarkably, half of the vines lie on limestone gravels along the edge of the estuary. The vineyard is certified organic and Demeter. Agroecology has been practised here for twenty years, complemented over the past six years by agroforestry, which now covers 4 hectares of the property.

The vintage
The year was marked by particularly hot summer weather. Fortunately, the proximity of the estuary played a fundamental regulating role, helping to moderate temperatures and preserve all the freshness needed for the proper development of the growing cycle.

Winemaking and aging
Plot-by-plot vinification. Maceration extends over 23 days with temperatures maintained between 18 and 24°C. Extraction is carried out gently and steadily through the use of a neutral gas to stimulate movement, followed by a delicate vertical pressing. Aging then lasts from 12 to 16 months. It is divided between 35% new barrels, 35% one-wine barrels and 30% diamond-shaped concrete egg vats, a technical choice intended to enhance the brightness and freshness of the fruit. Alcohol content: 13.2% vol.

Grape varieties
83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
