Château Nénin 2008

Slightly less impressive than I had hoped for, but still excellent, this wine shows more herbaceousness than I recalled from barrel, yet it is made in a classic style, with loads of spice as well as mocha-infused blackcurrants and sweet cherries. It is elegant, cleanly made, and should drink nicely for at least a decade or more.

Muscular tannins give this red a broad-shouldered character, carrying loam, tobacco and sanguine notes over a core of plum and fig. There's good concentration, but the flavors are austere. Best from 2014 through 2020. 4,250 cases produced.

A thick and rich wine with loads of fruit. Dense and juicy with loads of fruit. Chocolate, cherry and currants. Lots going on. Layered and fascinating. Give this three or four years. May be better than 2005.

Tasted blind. Slightly dull blackish crimson. Dusty, medium intensity nose. Lacks fruit in the middle. Falls away. (JR)

Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, spices, fresh herbs and smoke. A juicy, spicy midweight with a slightly medicinal cast to its flavours of berries, mint and fresh herbs. I doubt I would have picked this supple, moderately ripe wine blind as Pomerol. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and a faint greenness.

Showing its age in the colour and with its secondary nuances of truffle, forest, herb, tobacco leaf and plums, the medium-bodied wine has softened and added more sweetness to the red fruits. There is a touch of masculinity on the palate, but with a bit more ageing, that should soften as well.

Another mature Pomerol, the 2008 Château Nenin offers a forward, ready-to-go feel as well as medium body, integrated tannins, and good complexity in its truffle, cigar, dried herb, and sweet black fruit-driven bouquet. It's a charmer to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years. The blend of the 2008 is 81% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc.

A superbly balanced wine, with an impeccably velvety texture, where the layered violet flavours are superb; there is impressive length on the palate; this wine fully reveals itself after three hours of opening.

Soft in its velvety bitters, with a medium-bodied structure. The whole is refined and delicate, with a fresh, silky feel.

Lovely, full-bodied texture, quite tannic, long finish.

Attractive perfumed wine, rich, soft, generous and opulent. It has powerful, ripe fruit flavors of black berry and sweet plum that gives great richness.
