Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Picque Caillou 2000
Tasting Notes
Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby-purple hue, evidence of a fine concentration.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich and nuanced. It first releases aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry and sweet tobacco, underscored by earthy touches. Over time, it reveals superb tertiary and autumnal notes evoking dried flowers, leather and cigar box.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate captivates with its elegance and purity. It offers richly fruity material despite its age, supported by softened tannins, resulting in a harmonious and refined tasting experience.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or braised meats, such as leg of lamb with herbs or braised beef cheek. It also pairs perfectly with fine poultry such as roast duck, as well as with pressed, cooked-curd cheeses such as an aged Comté.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate this vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 17 and 18°C, after a delicate decanting to let its bouquet breathe. This wine has reached full maturity and now offers an optimal tasting window.
The classic elegance of a great red wine from Pessac-Léognan
The Estate
Built in 1756 by architect Jean Laclotte, the Château Picque Caillou estate is a historic property in the Bordeaux region of France. This 25-hectare urban vineyard, located on the outskirts of the city, has undergone a true renaissance under the impetus of the Denis-Calvet family. Today, the estate is led by Laurent Marti, who is bringing fresh momentum with a focus on technical quality and wine tourism. This singular estate passionately carries on the tradition of crafting authentic wines that reflect a genuine terroir preserved at the heart of the metropolitan area.
The Vineyard
Located in the commune of Mérignac, this urban vineyard flourishes at the historic heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vines grow on a characteristic terroir of gravelly rises and stony soils, shaped by millennia of deposits from the Garonne River. This perfectly draining soil stores daytime heat and releases it at night, encouraging slow and complete ripening of the grapes.
The Vintage
The year 2000 is recognised as an outstanding vintage on Bordeaux's left bank. Very favourable weather conditions, combining ample sunshine with moderate rainfall, allowed the grapes to reach optimal phenolic ripeness, resulting in wines that are rich, structured and endowed with great ageing potential.
Winemaking and Ageing
The making of this wine is guided by a constant pursuit of balance and delicacy. The winemaking process is carried out with precision to extract character while preserving the purity of the aromas. Ageing in French oak barrels then refines the tannins and subtly integrates the woody notes, shaping a wine of classic elegance.
Grape Varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (35%), Petit Verdot (5%).
