James Suckling

Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas

This wine offers captivating aromas of subtle rust, complemented by a seductive floral character and notes of red cherries. On the palate it’s medium- to full-bodied, featuring chewy yet refined tannins. This is really well constructed and delineated, making it truly fascinating. Sourced from a 0.55-hectare old head-trained vineyard planted at 900 meters in El Ferro in Corullon. While it is currently drinkable, it will undoubtedly benefit from a couple of years of cellaring.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Luis Gutiérrez

The bottled 2022 La Faraona, from the 0.5 hectares of 82-year-old vines at 800 to 860 meters above sea level they own in the "paraje" of El Fierro in Corullón, is a lot less explosive and showy than the barrel sample I tasted almost 12 months ago. In fact, the wine feels more backward, closed and austere than any of the 2022s. It has more of everything: it's very spicy and peppery, with plenty of tannins and grip. This is going to require more time in bottle. It shows some notes of sweet spices that should integrate with a little more time. Patience... It matured in foudre for eight months. 2,050 bottles, 82 magnums, 16 double magnums and seven Jeroboams produced. It was bottled in November 2023.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for La Faraona 2022 from Descendientes de Jose Palacios

Tasting

On the palate, this Spanish wine stands out for its brightness and intense cherry aromas, complemented by notes of fennel. The finish is refreshing, marked by pronounced mineral nuances and impressive depth.

A great wine from Bierzo revealing the full beauty of its exceptional terroir

The estate

Descendientes de J. Palacios, a family business founded by Alvaro Palacios, the eminent figure behind the winemaking revolution Spain has experienced over the past twenty years, and his nephew Ricardo Perez, is a true family story. Named after Alvaro's father and Ricardo's grandfather, who passed away in 2000, the Descendientes de Jose Palacios bodega was established near the village of Villafranca del Bierzo, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain.

The vineyard

Driven by the desire to showcase the exceptional potential of the DO Bierzo, a wine region that was still little recognised, the Palacios family established a bodega there. They chose to settle near Corullón, drawn by the unique characteristics of its terroir. This terroir stands out for its great diversity and arid soils, and is home to a vineyard of old vines dominated by Mencia, the emblematic black grape variety of Bierzo.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification takes place in oak vats with regular punching down and the use of indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation begins spontaneously in the same oak vat, after which the wine is aged in barrels.
