Decanter

Faiveley’s half-hectare of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet was acquired in 2008 as part of the acquisition of Domaine Monnot, engineered by Erwan Faiveley and then-CEO Bernard Hervet. Running the length of the vineyard downslope from the ex-Monnot parcel of Bâtard, it delivered in 2022 a wine of great elegance, with ripe pear and marzipan fruit and abundant floral notes. The texture is rich without being heavy, and the finish lingers invitingly on the palate. This wine will open nicely in three to five years and should drink well for decades.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Faiveley

Tasting

Appearance
The glass reveals a pale, clear yellow colour, adorned with delicate green highlights.

Nose
The bouquet proves complex and beautifully refined. It opens on aromas of white and yellow fruits, such as fresh pear and nectarine, underlined by floral notes of acacia and orange blossom. Aeration brings out touches of fresh brioche, hazelnut and light toasted nuances, complemented by a subtle hint of honey.

Palate
The attack reveals a broad, structured material while maintaining a lovely restraint. The rich texture balances perfectly with a refreshing acidity. The palate expresses flavours of stewed fruits, candied lemon and white peach, supported by a chalky mineral framework. The finish is long, lively and harmonious.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Grand Cru, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Aeration of 15 to 30 minutes is advised before tasting. Accessible from today, this wine has the structure needed to evolve favourably in the cellar until around 2037.

Food and wine pairings

This white wine pairs ideally with seafood and shellfish, such as lobster thermidor, scallops with beurre blanc or grilled turbot. It also perfectly accompanies poultry in sauce, such as poularde with morels or blanquette de veau, as well as aged cheeses like Comté or Brie de Meaux.

The estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is a historic institution of Burgundy. Today led by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, who embody the seventh generation, the estate oversees a vast vineyard spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Combining respect for tradition with modernised practices, the estate has committed to a strong environmental approach, with a full conversion of its vines to organic farming.

The vineyard

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is a prestigious appellation located in the commune of Puligny-Montrachet. The plot farmed by the estate was acquired in 2008 and is home to vines planted in 1980. Situated at an altitude of between 240 and 250 metres, this terroir benefits from an easterly exposure. The soils are composed of brown limestone mixed with clay, offering favourable conditions for the vine under a temperate continental climate.

The vintage

The 2022 year was marked by particularly hot summer temperatures. A providential stormy episode at the beginning of June brought the necessary moisture to the soils, thus avoiding water stress during the growing period. These weather conditions favoured optimal ripening, yielding healthy grapes at harvest.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes intended for the production of this Grand Cru are hand-picked and then rigorously selected before a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, including a fine proportion of new barrels, for a period of four weeks. The wine then benefits from 18 months of ageing on lees, accompanied by regular bâtonnage to give it greater complexity and texture.

Grape variety

This wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
