Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Pommard 1er Cru "Les Argillières" 2023 Domaine Lejeune

Tasting notes

Colour
This red wine reveals a deep, intense ruby hue, with a slight transparency and bright cherry glints.

Nose
Wonderfully complex, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of ripe red fruits such as black cherry, morello cherry and wild strawberry. It then develops delicate floral nuances of violet, a chalky minerality and earthy touches evoking undergrowth, crushed rock and mushrooms.

Palate
From the very first sip, the palate is harmonious and fluid, carried by a silky texture. The tannins, remarkably fine, perfectly support the fruity expression. A lovely mineral tension stretches the wine through to a remarkably persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This great red wine pairs beautifully with characterful meats such as furred or feathered game, or a traditional beef bourguignon. It also goes very well with grilled meats, herb-roasted lamb, poultry in a rich wine sauce, as well as matured cheeses with a natural rind.

Service and storage

With a fine structure, this Pommard 1er Cru "Les Argillières" 2023 has excellent ageing potential and can be enjoyed until around 2038.

The elegance and minerality of a great Pommard wine

The estate

Founded in 1783, Domaine Lejeune is a historic estate located in the heart of Burgundy. Established in the former buildings of the Confrérie du Saint Sacrement, this estate oversees a vineyard of 8.7 hectares. After a long family succession, a new chapter began in 2023 with the acquisition of the estate by Louis de Belleroche, together with his partner Nicolas Rerolle, who are the current owners. Certified organic, the estate stands out for its commitment to biodynamics and its deep respect for terroir, producing wines of great authenticity.

The vineyard

The Climat Les Argillières is one of the most renowned plots within the Pommard appellation. Located to the north-east of the village, this terroir is characterised by predominantly clay soils resting on a rich limestone base. The vines, with an average age of forty-five years, benefit from naturally low yields and meticulous soil work, sometimes carried out with a horse, fostering a unique mineral expression and aromatic concentration.

The vintage

2023 stands out as one of the finest vintages of the decade. The growing season benefited from ideal weather conditions, with no major climatic incidents. A perfect balance between spring rains, a summer with moderate temperatures and a dry autumn allowed the grapes to reach optimal phenolic ripeness in impeccable health.

Winemaking and ageing

For this Pommard 1er Cru "Les Argillières" 2023, the harvest is entirely by hand. Vinification involves semi-carbonic maceration with 30 to 50% whole bunches, lightly foot-trodden. After a fermentation period of around three weeks, the wine is aged on fine lees for twelve to eighteen months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new. The wine is bottled without filtration or fining.
