Description
The elegance and mineral complexity of a Burgundy wine crafted by Domaine Perrot-Minot
The estate
Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, Domaine Perrot-Minot spans thirteen hectares at the heart of Burgundy. Now run by Christophe Perrot-Minot, who took over in 1993, the estate stands out for its absolute rigour and certified organic viticulture. The domaine favours very low yields and drastic grape selection to reveal the purity of its terroirs. Recognised among the region's finest references, the domaine crafts wines combining precision, elegance and depth.
The vineyard
Located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, the Mazoyères-Chambertin vineyard flourishes on an east-facing slope, at an altitude of between 240 and 280 metres. This distinctive terroir rests on a complex geology derived from ancient marine sediments. The upper part of the slope consists of hard rock and scree, while the lower slopes reveal clay-limestone soils rich in Jurassic marine fossils. This composition gives the grapes a distinctive mineral expression.
The vintage
2022 proved particularly demanding. The growing cycle began with a cold, late spring, followed by flowering in mid-June disrupted by heavy rainfall that caused coulure and millerandage. Mildew pressure reached historic levels, affecting clay soils in particular. Despite these extreme weather conditions and very low yields, the harvest took place under more favourable circumstances.
Winemaking and aging
The hand-harvested grapes for this 2022 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru undergo meticulous successive sorting, including a pass through an optical sorting table. Vinification begins with a five- to seven-day cold maceration, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Due to the conditions of the year, the proportion of whole clusters was reduced to between 8 and 10%. The wine is then aged without racking in French oak barrels, about half of which are new. Bottling takes place without filtration or fining, in keeping with the lunar cycles.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir (100%).
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Perrot-Minot
Tasting notes
Color
This wine displays a deep ruby hue, enhanced by garnet reflections and a vivid cherry nuance.
Nose
The bouquet opens with a lovely freshness dominated by aromas of red cherry and morello cherry, mingled with earthy, mineral notes and subtle herbaceous touches. With aeration, it grows more complex, revealing floral nuances reminiscent of violet.
Palate
The palate offers concentrated, elegant material, supported by silky, well-integrated tannins. Refreshing acidity perfectly balances the whole. The mid-palate unfolds fruity and mineral layers, extending into a long, lingering finish.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted or sauced feathered game, roast lamb, glazed poultry or a fine cut of beef. It also goes wonderfully with characterful soft-rind cheeses.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this 2022 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru in its youth, it is recommended to serve it between 12 and 14°C, and between 14 and 16°C once it has gained more maturity. With a fine structure, it can continue to age in the cellar and develop favourably until around 2037.
