The estate
Located in Galicia, in the heart of the spectacular Ribeira Sacra region, the F. Algueira estate is run by its founders, Fernando González Riveiro and his wife Ana Delia Pérez Somoza. While the winemaking adventure and the restoration of the terraces began in the late 1970s, the official brand and the modern winery were established in 1998. Today, the estate covers some 30 hectares of vines on extremely steep slopes. It is renowned worldwide for its heroic viticulture and its work to preserve native Galician grape varieties.
The vineyard
The grapes come from the Riberas del Sil subzone, within the Ribeira Sacra appellation. The three-hectare vineyard stretches across the villages of Abeleda and Aviador. The vines, no more than thirty years old, are planted on terraces on extremely steep slopes at altitudes of between 200 and 600 metres. Facing east and south-east, they enjoy a continental climate with Atlantic influences. The soils consist of granite, quartz and gneiss. The vines are single Guyot-pruned and receive no irrigation whatsoever, reflecting a demanding approach to viticulture.
Vinification and ageing
The Cornamus 2024 was harvested by hand in September 2024. In the cellar, the bunches are partially destemmed and then foot-trodden. Fermentation, triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts, begins in stainless steel tanks and is completed in a 1,000-litre foudre. The wine is then aged for 16 months on its lees in 2,000-litre French oak foudres, with regular bâtonnage, preserving the natural elegance of this Spanish wine through minimal intervention.
