Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Santenay Village "Les Pierres Sèches" 2023 Jean Chartron

Tasting notes

Colour
The colour reveals a pale, clear gold hue, enhanced by subtle greenish highlights.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves complex, blending scents of ripe white fruit with delicate floral touches. Notes of lemon and crushed stone underline a lovely minerality.

Palate
Displaying an elegant structure and beautiful tension, the palate offers vibrant acidity, perfectly integrated. Flavours of peach, apricot and lemon harmonise with a saline minerality that extends into a remarkably long finish.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs wonderfully with fine shellfish such as lobster or oysters, as well as with delicate fish prepared simply, like grilled or poached sole. It also makes an ideal accompaniment to mature cheeses, such as an aged Comté or Beaufort.

Service and storage

The Santenay Village "Les Pierres Sèches" 2023 shows fine aging potential and can be enjoyed until around 2028.

The mineral expression of a white wine from the Côte de Beaune

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Jean-Edouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron is a historic family institution located in Puligny-Montrachet, in Burgundy. Spanning approximately 14.5 hectares, the vineyard is now led by the fifth generation, embodied by Jean-Michel Chartron and his sister Anne-Laure. The estate stands out for its terroir-focused philosophy, favouring precision and minerality, with a gradual shift towards organic viticulture initiated in 2014. Boasting twenty-three appellations, it enjoys great international renown for its authentic, distinctive wines.

The vineyard

Located at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, the Santenay terroir benefits from a predominantly east-southeast facing exposure. The Les Pierres Sèches plot is characterised by a complex geological mosaic, made up of fragmented white limestone, grey limestone, marl and silica. This dry soil, with exceptional drainage, provides the vines with ideal conditions to express a unique salinity and minerality.

The vintage

2023 stood out as one of the hottest years ever recorded in the region, marked by generous temperatures and pronounced water deficits. These exceptional climatic conditions called for great vigilance and early harvesting in order to preserve the natural balance and freshness of the berries.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the Santenay Village "Les Pierres Sèches" 2023 are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting. Fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels, 30% of which are new and 70% are one to five years old. Aging extends over twelve months in wood, followed by a further four months in stainless steel tanks before bottling, allowing for perfect integration.
