The Finesse and Complexity of a Grand Cru from Burgundy
The Estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure in Burgundy, France. This family estate, a pioneer in adopting environmentally friendly viticultural practices as early as the late 1980s, oversees a vineyard of approximately 100 hectares spread across the region's most prestigious appellations. Today, the fourth generation leads the estate, with Frédéric Drouhin as president, while Véronique and Philippe Drouhin oversee winemaking and vineyard management respectively, thus perpetuating the house's expertise and identity.
The Vineyard
Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is a historic terroir located in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. East-facing on a gentle slope, the vines thrive on varied soils. The upper part of the slope is composed of Premeaux limestone and marine fossils, providing natural drainage, while the lower part of the plot rests on deeper clay-limestone soils. The estate practises organic and biodynamic farming methods, promoting soil vitality through horse ploughing and the use of natural composts.
The Vintage
The year 2022 began with strong fungal pressure in spring, requiring increased vigilance in the vineyards. Flowering, which occurred in June, was marked by coulure and millerandage, reducing yields but promoting greater berry concentration. The summer season then offered plenty of sunshine and favourable temperatures, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes for the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2022 are harvested by hand into small perforated crates. Vinification includes between 20 and 50% whole clusters, with fermentation taking place in small open vats using indigenous yeasts. Gentle punching-down and pumping-over are carried out over two to three weeks. Ageing then takes place for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new.
