Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Nuits-Saint-Georges Village 2023 Joseph Drouhin

Tasting notes

Colour
The wine reveals itself in a dark red hue, both deep and pronounced.

Nose
Powerful and imbued with elegance, the bouquet reveals intense aromas of cherry and blackberry, intertwined with notes of cedar wood that gradually give way to subtle gamey nuances.

Palate
The palate opens with a superb balance between suppleness and structure. Medium to full-bodied, it unfolds silky tannins supported by a vibrant acidity that enhances the brightness of the fruit. Deep flavours of black cherry and plum, along with a hint of liquorice, harmonise with touches of sweet spices and undergrowth. The finish, remarkably persistent, evokes fruit syrups.

Food and wine pairing

Thanks to its balanced structure, this red wine pairs beautifully with flavourful meats such as game, braised beef in sauce, a fine beef rib, or roast pork. It will also enhance spiced dishes such as tagine or couscous, as well as regional cheeses with an intense aromatic profile, like Époisses.

Service and storage

To fully release its aromatic complexity, it is recommended to lightly decant this Nuits-Saint-Georges Village 2023 and serve it at a temperature of 16°C. Built for ageing, it will reveal its full tasting potential between 8 and 13 years after its vintage and may be cellared until around 2038 under optimal storage conditions.

The elegance and depth of a great red wine from Nuits-Saint-Georges by Joseph Drouhin

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune, France, the House of Joseph Drouhin stands as an iconic figure of Burgundy. Initially a trading house, it developed into an essential estate cultivating prestigious terroirs. Now led by the fourth generation of the family, comprising Frédéric, Philippe, Laurent and Véronique, the estate is distinguished by its forward-thinking approach. A pioneer, it has applied the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the late 1980s, seeking to express the authenticity and purity of each plot through wines of remarkable precision.

The vineyard

Rooted in the southern part of the Côte de Nuits, the terroir of Nuits-Saint-Georges benefits from an ideal continental climate. The vines enjoy a privileged exposure facing east and southeast. The uniqueness of this vineyard lies in its great geological diversity, combining limestone-rich soils, stony alluvial deposits, as well as deep marl-limestone soils, giving the grapes a unique character that blends power and finesse.

The vintage

The year 2023 stands out as one of the hottest recorded in the region, even surpassing the temperatures of 2022. Despite this marked heat, particularly at the end of August and in September, the growing cycle allowed for generous and high-quality yields. Far from being an extreme sun-drenched vintage, it managed to preserve a lovely freshness, offering grapes of optimal ripeness while retaining the classic precision expected in the region.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes intended for this Nuits-Saint-Georges Village 2023 are hand-harvested in small perforated crates, then rigorously sorted and fully de-stemmed. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts during a two- to three-week vatting period in small open vats, punctuated by punching down and pumping over. After passing through a vertical press, the wine is transferred into barrels for an ageing period of 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, of which 20 to 25% are new oak sourced from high-forest woodlands.
