Description

Tasting Notes and Characteristics of the 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Village by Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Appearance

The wine reveals a brilliantly pure colour, enhanced by subtle white-gold highlights.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of white flowers, sweet stone fruits and apple blossom, underlined by a hint of vanilla and a minerality reminiscent of wet stone. Aromas of yellow citrus bring lovely energy. With time, nuances of almond and lightly toasted dried fruits develop.

Palate

Ample and fleshy, the palate offers a remarkable balance between richness and freshness. The attack is lively, revealing a silky texture and charming citrus notes. The finish is long, persistent and incisive, ending with great complexity of floral and fruity flavours.

Food and wine pairings

This white wine pairs ideally with delicate poultry such as roast chicken with herbs or turkey. It also matches beautifully with white meats in cream sauce, white fish, oysters, shellfish or a seafood vol-au-vent.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Village, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 13°C. Accessible now, this wine will reach its peak within five to eight years and can be cellared until around 2033.

The authentic expression of the Puligny-Montrachet terroir by Maison Joseph Drouhin

The estate

Founded in 1880 in Beaune by Joseph Drouhin, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a leading institution in Burgundy. Today led by the fourth generation, represented by Frédéric, Véronique, Laurent and Philippe Drouhin, the estate stretches across approximately 100 hectares throughout the region. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture, the domaine is recognised as the largest biodynamic producer in Burgundy, with practices initiated as early as 1993. A member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini association, the family upholds a philosophy focused on the authentic expression of terroirs, from France to Oregon.

The vineyard

Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the vineyard of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation rests on soils composed of limestone, mixed with ochre earth and small pebbles. These vines, planted at a moderate altitude varying between 230 and 250 metres, benefit from ideal conditions to express all the minerality and energy characteristic of this historic terroir.

The vintage

The year 2023 stood out as one of the hottest in the region's history, with temperatures exceeding seasonal averages. This growing cycle was marked by a significant water deficit and strong disease pressure. Despite these demanding climatic challenges, conditions allowed the grapes to reach perfect maturity, yielding a generous harvest that required rigorous sorting.

Vinification and ageing

Crafted from grapes and musts carefully selected from partners, this 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Village is hand-harvested into slatted crates. After meticulous sorting, a slow pneumatic pressing is carried out. The juice from the last press is separated from the free-run juice. Following a light settling, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new. Ageing then continues for 14 to 16 months, with decisions made on the basis of regular tastings to preserve the identity of the terroir.

Grape variety

100% Chardonnay.
