The estate
Founded in 1880, L'Oratoire des Papes takes its name from the oratory dedicated to Saint Mark located beneath its vineyards. In 1926, Léonce Amouroux officially registered the estate and created its iconic Art Deco label. Since 2000, the property has belonged to Maison Ogier (AdVini group) and is managed by François Miquel. Under the leadership of Édouard Guérin, technical director since 2015, the estate has been cultivating its vines using organic farming methods since 2008 and produces elegant wines that express the diversity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's terroirs. The 16th-century priory, fully restored between 2014 and 2016, now houses the winemaking and aging facilities.
The vineyard
Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes comes from a mosaic terroir characteristic of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The vines, approximately forty to fifty years old, are planted on soils composed of rolled pebbles, safres, and limestone fragments. This geological diversity gives the wine its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. The vineyard is managed according to organic farming principles, favoring environmentally respectful practices and promoting soil vitality.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape began early with bud break in mid-March, followed by a rainy spring that delayed flowering. The cool and overcast summer slowed grape ripening. Fortunately, the return of sunshine in the second half of September and throughout October allowed the grapes to reach satisfactory maturity. Harvesting took place in late September and October with rigorous berry selection, giving rise to balanced wines favoring freshness and finesse.
Winemaking and aging
The Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes 2014 is vinified using methods that respect the fruit and the terroir. After co-fermentation of the different grape varieties, this Rhône Valley wine is aged for twelve months in large oak casks. This aging period is followed by a pre-blending phase in concrete tanks for six to eight months before bottling, allowing the wine to harmonize its components and develop its aromatic complexity.
Grape varieties
Grenache (approximately 80%), Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault.
