Characteristics and tasting notes for the WC Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese*** Dry 2024 by Markus Molitor
Tasting
Appearance
A delicate pale yellow hue adorned with greenish reflections in its youth, destined to evolve towards beautiful golden nuances over the years.
Nose
The bouquet reveals great aromatic complexity, blending scents of peach, apricot and orange zest, subtly complemented by notes of brioche.
Palate
Elegant, concentrated and remarkably precise, the palate offers a full, rounded volume of medium body. The whole is enhanced by a fine acidic structure and a very pronounced minerality reminiscent of wet stone, which lingers persistently on a very long finish.
Food and wine pairings
This great white wine pairs wonderfully with noble firm-fleshed fish such as turbot or sea bass, seafood such as scallops, or white meats accompanied by a cream and mushroom sauce. It will also elevate sophisticated vegetable dishes featuring root vegetables or truffles.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve the WC Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese*** Dry 2024 at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. Endowed with exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be enjoyed until approximately 2064.
A great dry and mineral Riesling from the Mosel by Markus Molitor
The estate
Taken over and truly created in its current form in 1984 by Markus Molitor, who remains the sole owner and director, the Markus Molitor estate is an essential reference. Located in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, this property extends over approximately 120 hectares of vines, mostly planted on vertiginous slopes. The brand stands out for its ambition to revive the golden age of the region's great wines, producing terroir cuvées of extreme precision and exceptional longevity, while respecting a craftsman-like approach.
The vineyard
This German white wine comes from the famous Zeltinger Sonnenuhr cru, located in the Mosel appellation. This exceptional 21-hectare terroir stands out for its steep slopes with south to south-southwest exposure. The vines flourish on medium-depth, very stony soils composed of weathered clay schist. The particularity of this parcel lies in the presence of very old ungrafted Riesling vines, dating from before phylloxera, preserved on areas that have never undergone land consolidation.
Winemaking and ageing
To craft the WC Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese*** Dry 2024, the grapes are harvested by hand at the end of October. An extremely rigorous sorting is carried out to retain only perfectly healthy berries. After gentle crushing, a skin maceration of several hours is performed. Fermentation then begins slowly and spontaneously at low temperature. Finally, the wine benefits from extended ageing on the lees in traditional large oak casks.
