Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Domaine de Roure 2023 red by Paul Jaboulet-Aîné

Tasting

Appearance
The wine reveals a beautiful ruby red hue, deep and adorned with violet reflections.

Nose
Of great complexity, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of very ripe black cherry, closely intertwined with spicy and meaty touches. Upon aeration, subtle nuances of prune and pepper come to enrich the whole.

Palate
Fresh and endowed with a fine structure, the palate offers supple tannins and a velvety texture with almost chocolatey accents. Its evolution reveals savoury notes of juicy red and black fruits, extending towards a persistent and perfectly balanced finish.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this 2023 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. While it can be enjoyed now, it also possesses a remarkable ageing potential, allowing it to evolve in the cellar over several decades.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted poultry or slow-cooked dishes. It will also enhance grilled vegetables such as aubergine parmigiana, peppers, as well as sautéed mushrooms or aged cheeses.

The mineral and complex expression of a red wine from Crozes-Hermitage

The estate

Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet in Tain l'Hermitage, the Paul Jaboulet-Aîné House is a true institution of the Rhône Valley. Spanning approximately 115 hectares, this historic estate experienced a genuine renaissance following its acquisition by the Frey family in 2006. Under the leadership of Caroline Frey, the vineyard was entirely converted to organic and then biodynamic farming. Today, Delphine Frey oversees the strategic vision of these exceptional terroirs, thus perpetuating a family legacy founded on respect for the environment and the pursuit of excellence.

The vineyard

Acquired in 1996, this 3.5-hectare vineyard is located in the commune of Gervans, within the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The vines, planted in 1945, thrive on steep slopes facing south-west. This singular terroir is characterised by granitic soils rich in minerals, providing ideal conditions for the vine. Deeply committed to preserving biodiversity, the estate has also established a protected ecological refuge of 1.4 hectares.

The vintage

The year began with a marked water deficit, offset by welcome rainfall in mid-May that promoted optimal flowering in June. The summer season was then punctuated by several episodes of hail between July and August. Despite these climatic challenges, the old vines demonstrated exceptional resilience, allowing the grapes to continue their ripening at a steady pace. The harvest extended over several weeks to collect berries brimming with juice and endowed with thick skins.

Winemaking and ageing

The berries destined for Domaine de Roure 2023 are hand-harvested into small crates before undergoing rigorous sorting. Entirely destemmed, the grapes are macerated for three weeks with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation. Ageing then takes place over a period of twelve to eighteen months in various vessels, including concrete eggs, truncated conical vats, demi-muids and French oak barrels, of which 20% are new.
