The Elegance of a Great Meursault by Maison Vincent Girardin
The Estate
Founded in 1980 on two hectares of vines, Vincent Girardin has today become a key name in Burgundy. Based in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the estate farms around 100 hectares, including 18 hectares of its own vines, complemented by carefully selected grape purchases. Since 2012, the estate has belonged to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, chaired by Jean-Pierre Nié. The technical team, led by Éric Germain, continues to uphold the style of this prestigious house, crafting pure and precise wines with the utmost respect for Burgundian terroirs.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this Meursault cuvée come from the Les Tillets plot, ideally situated to the west of the village, close to the climat Les Clous. The vines, averaging 45 years of age, thrive on limestone soil that lies along the same seam as the renowned Narvaux terroir. The vineyard is carefully tended using Guyot pruning according to the Poussard method. Meticulous green harvesting work, including debudding, trellising and trimming, is regularly carried out to ensure the quality and health of the grapes.
The Vintage
2024 proved to be a challenging year in the Côte de Beaune, marked by constant weather pressure that called for great vigilance and numerous interventions in the vineyards. Despite these meteorological challenges, this vintage is a fine success, particularly favourable for the region's white wines, which retained remarkable freshness and brightness.
Winemaking and Ageing
Following hand-picked harvesting, the bunches undergo double sorting, both in the vineyard and at the winery. Pneumatic pressing allows for slow extraction, followed by light settling. This 2024 Meursault is aged in 228-litre French oak barrels, with 15% new wood. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur naturally, driven by indigenous yeasts and bacteria. The wine then rests for 16 months on its fine lees, without any stirring. One month before bottling, which is carried out in strict accordance with the lunar calendar, the barrels are blended together in stainless steel tanks. The process concludes with racking, fining and light filtration.
