Characteristics and tasting tips for A Trail of Smoke 42 Years Old by House of Hazelwood

    Tasting

    Appearance
A bright, radiant amber hue. Visually vibrant, this spirit shows great clarity along with thick, slow legs, a testament to the viscosity and aromatic concentration gained over its 42 years of ageing.

    Nose
The bouquet evolves remarkably in the glass. It opens with a gentle sweetness of ripe fruit, honey and vanilla, before shifting towards a drier, more herbaceous register of thyme, heather and hay. A discreet yet persistent wood smoke, reminiscent of a distant campfire, weaves through subtle citrus aromas (lemon zest, grapefruit, orange) and a delicate hint of sea salt.

    Palate
The attack is generous and indulgent, revealing luscious notes of tropical fruit (mango, papaya) and grilled pineapple, carried by the vanilla sweetness of the oak. The peat forms an elegant backbone, expressed through warm wood smoke and fine touches of bacon, without ever overwhelming the palate. Maritime notes of salt and dried seaweed complete this rich, silky texture. The finish is long, delicate and wonderfully smooth, leaving a lingering trail of smoke and herbs, with a final touch of salinity.

    Pairings and tasting occasions
This exceptional spirit calls for contemplative sipping, ideally late in the evening, served in a tulip glass or copita at 18–20°C. It is best enjoyed neat, although a few drops of water can further reveal its herbaceous and maritime nuances. As for food, it pairs beautifully with caramelised tropical fruit desserts (roast pineapple, citrus tart), aged hard cheeses (Cheddar, Comté, Gouda), delicate smoked fish or fine dark chocolate with 60–70% cocoa.

    Mixology
While its aromatic profile could in theory inspire high-end creations such as an Old Fashioned or a Rob Roy, this exceptionally rare spirit is above all meant to be savoured unadorned. Enjoying it neat is highly recommended to fully appreciate its historical and aromatic complexity.

    Other characteristics
This spirit is a delicately peated Island Blended Malt. The smoke is fine, woody and perfectly controlled, acting as a background thread rather than a dominant force. It is bottled at 46.5% vol.

House of Hazelwood: the intimate legacy of a great Scotch whisky
Unveiled to the public in 2022, House of Hazelwood has roots stretching back almost a century. The brand stems from a singular tradition begun by the Gordon family, its current owners: setting aside exceptional casks strictly for private use. Although its symbolic home is in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, this luxury bottling project explores the full breadth of Scotch whisky terroir. House of Hazelwood stands out for an inventory of extraordinary age, offering only very old spirits. The house philosophy rests on rarity and uniqueness, giving discerning enthusiasts unprecedented access to an irreplaceable liquid heritage, a true testament to the golden age of 20th-century Scotch.

A Trail of Smoke 42 Years Old: a masterful expression of the Scottish islands
Part of the prestigious Legacy Collection, A Trail of Smoke 42 Years Old is a blend of the utmost rarity. This whisky is the result of a meticulous marriage of single malts sourced exclusively from various Scottish island distilleries. Unlike expressions dominated by aggressive peat, this whisky was designed to offer restrained smoke, serving as an elegant backdrop that allows the spirit to express itself fully.

This spirit owes its character to an exceptional ageing period of over four decades, with a notable influence from American white oak casks. This long maturation achieves a perfect balance between the sweetness of tropical fruit, the dryness of wild herbs and maritime salinity. Bottled at 46.5% vol., it retains remarkable vibrancy and structure.

The exclusivity of this spirit is reflected in its extremely limited release of just 385 bottles worldwide. Each bottle is a true collector's piece: presented in an elegant decanter, it is hand-labelled, individually numbered and accompanied by a matching luxury case. This meticulous attention to packaging underlines the ultra-premium positioning of this release.
