    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968 by House of Hazelwood

    Tasting

    Appearance
The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968 displays a dark, deep hue, the legacy of more than half a century spent in a single European oak sherry butt.

    Nose
The nose is rich, decadent and intense, carried by a resinous dimension and pronounced dried fruit notes. It develops distinct aromas of dried fruit, almonds, milk chocolate and a hint of coffee, accompanied by notes of Amarena cherry, fresh blackberry and cocoa. More surprising nuances of pear drops, shoe polish and honeyed granola dotted with chocolate chips round out this aromatic picture, with barely any alcoholic sting perceptible despite its 49.2% ABV.

    Palate
On the palate, this single grain proves intense and concentrated, while remaining surprisingly light in texture. It opens with notes of dark chocolate and tart cherry, then evolves towards cherry cola, roasted almonds dusted with cocoa, treacle tart and espresso, before giving way to cereal touches of puffed rice and wheat flakes. The palate is also marked by notes of roasted coffee and muscovado toffee, over a base of dried fruit (golden raisin, fig, date, prune and dried apricot) and brown sugar, lifted by a perfectly integrated touch of bitter oak. The long finish opens with fruity sweetness before turning towards a woody, cocoa-laden dryness, carried by a silky texture in which the alcohol is barely noticeable.

    Pairings and Tasting Moments
House of Hazelwood has not communicated any official pairing for this exceptional bottling. Given its aromatic profile dominated by dried fruit, chocolate, coffee and molasses, it will find a natural echo alongside a dark chocolate and candied fruit dessert, a treacle tart or a well-matured blue cheese. This whisky is best enjoyed neat, at cellar temperature, in a tulip or Glencairn glass, allowing the full complexity developed over its 53 years of maturation to be appreciated. A few drops of water can be added to open up certain notes further, although the alcoholic smoothness is already remarkable.

    Mixology
The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968 is an exceptional whisky, matured for more than half a century in a single cask. Its rarity, complexity and contemplative character call for it to be enjoyed unadorned, neat, in order to fully appreciate its rich aromatic depth.

The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968: a Rich, Intensely Sherried Scotch Single Grain from Girvan

House of Hazelwood: the Gordon Family's Scotch Whisky House
House of Hazelwood is a Scotch whisky house founded in 2022 by the Gordon family, heirs to William Grant & Sons, built on nearly a century of private reserves laid down in Dufftown, at the heart of Speyside. The brand draws on an exceptional inventory of old whiskies, malts, grains and blends, stored across several Scottish warehouses, including those near Hazelwood House, the family residence that gives the project its name, as well as within the distilleries of the William Grant & Sons group, notably Girvan for grain whiskies. Bottled in extremely limited series, structured around the Charles Gordon Collection and the Legacy Collection, House of Hazelwood champions a philosophy of maturation free from time constraints. The company is still chaired today by Glenn Gordon, great-great-grandson of founder William Grant, who heads William Grant & Sons, a group still 100% family-owned.

The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968: the Story of an Extraordinary Single Grain
The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968 is a single grain Scotch whisky distilled in 1968 at the Girvan distillery in South Ayrshire, then matured for 53 consecutive years in a single European oak sherry butt. This exceptionally long maturation for a grain whisky reflects an unusual ageing trial for the time, as sherry butts were then rarely used for this type of spirit, which was mainly destined for blends. The result is a whisky almost unrecognisable as a grain, revealing a richness and depth reminiscent of an old single malt.

Bottled at natural cask strength, at 49.2% ABV, with no added colouring and non-chill filtered, The Cask Trials preserves the full texture and aromas developed over the decades. Each numbered bottle is presented in a hand-engraved glass decanter and accompanied by an ash wood case adorned with gold leaf inlays.

This bottling belongs to the Charles Gordon Collection, the rarest and oldest whiskies drawn from the Gordon family's private reserves, built up over nearly a century. Praised by the specialist press, notably for its richness, viscosity and aromatic complexity, The Cask Trials 53 Year Old 1968 stands out as one of House of Hazelwood's most remarkable expressions, demonstrating the full potential of grain whiskies when given the time they deserve.
