Characteristics and tasting tips for the Jamaica Cask Strength 2006 from Mezan
Tasting
Nose
Rich, the nose exudes notes of flambéed banana, which evolves into candied and almost pastry-like aromas upon aeration, reminiscent of a still-warm muffin. The intense aromas of very ripe bananas conclude with softer notes of caramel and vanilla, supported by woody and spicy touches.
Palate
Fruity and well-balanced, this rum reveals typically Jamaican notes with an underlying depth. Mango, pineapple, a peppery hint, as well as notes of cocoa and tropical spices can be found. The flavors are very subtle on tropical fruits, spices and oak. The finish is long and elegant, slightly pastry-like with notes of raisins and stone fruit, offering a beautiful lingering aftertaste.
Mixology
This exceptional rum is best enjoyed neat to fully appreciate its complexity and authenticity.
A 16-year-old Jamaican rum, powerful and authentic
Mezan: the independent London bottler specializing in Caribbean rums
Founded in 1998 by Neil Mathieson, a master blender from a family of whisky merchants, Mezan is an independent London-based bottler belonging to the British company Marucia. Specializing in English-speaking Caribbean rums, the brand favors a purist approach: bottlings with no additives, no chill filtration, respecting the aromatic identity of each distillery. Its flagship, the Jamaica XO, a blend of Jamaican rums distilled in pot stills with a medium/light ester profile, embodies this philosophy of transparency. The dual tropical then European aging in old bourbon casks preserves the authenticity of the Caribbean terroir, setting Mezan apart among premium bottlers.
Jamaica Cask Strength 2006: an exceptional single cask from Worthy Park
The Jamaica Cask Strength 2006 is distilled from sugarcane molasses from the Worthy Park estate, a distillery established in 1670 and the oldest still in operation in Jamaica. After a slow fermentation using yeast strains cultivated on-site, the rum undergoes double distillation in a copper Forsyth's pot still.
This rum benefits from 16 years of aging: 3 years in Jamaica's tropical climate, followed by 13 years in a continental climate in Europe (Scotland) in ex-bourbon oak casks. This dual maturation develops a remarkable aromatic complexity while preserving the spirit's typically Jamaican character.
Drawn from a single cask, this limited edition makes each bottle a collector's piece for connoisseurs of exceptional rums.
