    Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the 14 Years Old "Caribbean Cask" by The Balvenie

    Tasting

    Appearance

This single malt from Speyside boasts a golden amber colour, a testament to its 14 years of maturation followed by finishing in casks that previously held Caribbean rum.

    Nose

The nose is rich and generous, dominated by soft, creamy notes of butterscotch. Vanilla expresses itself with elegance, accompanied by fresh, fruity nuances. As it opens up, exotic aromas emerge: pineapple, coconut, lime and banana mingle with floral and malty touches, underscored by delicate woody notes from American oak.

    Palate

The palate opens round and smooth. Vanilla blends harmoniously with the sweet, woody notes of the oak, while the fruity character continues to develop. Creamy caramel and honey provide structure, enriched by a light spice that adds complexity and depth. The characteristic warmth of Caribbean rum comes through, lending the whole a distinctive tropical dimension. The finish is soft, warm and lingering, with a delicate spicy touch and exotic fruit notes that linger pleasantly.

    Pairing Tips and Tasting Moments

This whisky is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity brought about by its double maturation. A few drops of water can be added to further release its exotic aromas. It is a spirit that particularly lends itself to relaxed moments at the end of the day.

    Mixology

Given its unique character and the aromatic complexity resulting from 14 years of ageing and its rum cask finish, we recommend enjoying this single malt neat, without embellishment, to fully appreciate all its subtleties.

    Other Characteristics

This whisky is unpeated. Its alcohol content of 43% allows for optimal expression of its aromatic profile while maintaining a lovely roundness on the palate.

A Speyside Single Malt with an Original Double Maturation

This whisky stands out for a production process that combines long maturation in American oak casks that previously held bourbon with a finish in casks that had previously held Caribbean rum. This double approach enriches the single malt's profile, bringing delicately tropical notes that complement the vanilla sweetness, caramel and silky woodiness characteristic of The Balvenie, without masking the malty identity of the spirit.

The Balvenie, a Scottish Speyside Distillery Since 1892

Founded in 1892 by William Grant in Dufftown, at the heart of Speyside, The Balvenie remains the family-owned property of William Grant & Sons. It perpetuates a craftsmanship rare in Scotland, with its own barley, traditional floor malting, an in-house cooperage and historic copper stills. This end-to-end mastery, from grain to cask, shapes the distillery's distinctive style and guarantees the quality consistency of its single malts. Under the guidance of its Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE, The Balvenie has notably distinguished itself through its expertise in cask finishing, now emblematic of the house.

A Caribbean Rum Cask Finish for a Unique Aromatic Profile

The 14 Years Old "Caribbean Cask" illustrates The Balvenie's maturation philosophy through a two-stage approach. After a primary ageing of at least 14 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks, the whisky benefits from a finish in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. This finishing stage lends the single malt an exotic dimension, with nuances of tropical fruit, honey and vanilla that echo Speyside's characteristic indulgent markers. Without overwhelming the woody notes, the rum casks' contribution highlights the smooth texture and spicy warmth that extend the finish. The 14 Years Old "Caribbean Cask" thus stands out as an accessible and distinctive expression, appreciated by Scotch whisky enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike, drawn to more sun-kissed profiles.
