    Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2019

    Tasting

    Appearance

The wine displays an elegant ruby-red hue.

    Nose

The nose reveals a complex bouquet of brown spices and black pepper, alongside vibrant, forward red fruit. Notes of black fruit round out this sophisticated aromatic palette.

    Palate

On the palate, this wine shows remarkable balance supported by fine, насыщенные tannins. The structure is both dense and elegant, with the seamless integration of 40% whole-cluster fruit lending precision and complexity. Black fruits dominate the mid-palate, accompanied by a lingering freshness despite the evident ripeness. The finish stretches on at length, unfolding savory dimensions that speak to the expression of the terroir.

    Food and wine pairings

This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 pairs perfectly with feathered game dishes such as partridge or roasted grouse. It also shines alongside a simply roasted prime cut of beef, mushroom-braised veal, or aged hard cheeses such as a long-aged Comté.

    Serving and cellaring

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 requires patience before it fully reveals its complexity. This dense, deep wine has significant aging potential and will benefit from being cellared under optimal conditions.

The refinement and aromatic expression of a Burgundy Grand Cru

    The estate

The Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair traces its origins to 2001, when Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family estate after studying viticulture and oenology. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, the domaine now farms around fourteen hectares across several prestigious appellations, including Richebourg Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru and Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Thibault Liger-Belair has managed the entire vineyard under organic farming certified by Ecocert and Biodyvin-certified biodynamics since 2008. The estate stands out for its modern approach, integrating eco-friendly installations such as geothermal and solar energy, while favoring a winemaking philosophy that respects terroirs and natural processes.

    The vineyard

Clos Vougeot from Thibault Liger-Belair covers 0.75 hectares, located in the southern part of the appellation, at the corner where the historic wall separating Échézeaux from Clos de Vougeot meets the lieu-dit Les Baudes Basses. The plot is a mix of vine ages, with 40% planted in 1992 and 60% dating back to 1944. The terroir is defined by remarkable geological diversity along the two hundred meters of row length: well-drained, stony clay-limestone soils at the top of the plot; small stones with red clay rich in iron oxide in the middle; and a finer clay-silt composition at the bottom. This heterogeneity gives the wine a complete, well-balanced expression of the grand cru. The southern exposure promotes optimal ripening of Pinot Noir.

    The vintage

The year 2019 began with a mild winter followed by a changeable spring with cooler spells. Summer stood out for high temperatures and generous sunshine, along with periods of drought. These conditions produced grapes of remarkable ripeness, combining concentration and balance. Favorable weather encouraged the development of generous, harmonious berries, offering exceptional quality potential for this vintage.

    Winemaking and aging

The Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 harvest was carried out by hand, with 40% whole clusters kept during vinification. Fermentation lasted three weeks, following a low-intervention approach that favors natural processes and avoids excessive handling. Aging took place over twenty months in French oak barrels, 60% of which were new—a measured proportion that adds structure and complexity without masking the expression of the terroir. The wood comes from the estate’s forests and is crafted by partner coopers to precise specifications.
