Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Hunter Valley Shiraz 2023 from Tyrrell's
Tasting
Colour
The wine reveals a vibrant purplish-red hue with violet reflections, offering lovely depth while remaining very clear, without excessive opacity.
Nose
The bouquet opens with lovely vibrancy, releasing aromas of fresh red fruit such as cherry, mingled with notes of ripe black fruit. The whole is enhanced by hints of cracked pepper and dried herbs, along with subtle nuances of charcuterie and fresh earth, with no dominant oak influence.
Palate
On the palate, this medium-bodied wine charms with its fruity attack and silky texture. It has supple, savoury tannins, perfectly balanced by a crisp acidity that brings plenty of energy. The finish is particularly fresh and persistent, irresistibly inviting you to prolong the tasting.
Food and Wine Pairing
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with roast turkey breast with herbs, grilled red meats such as rib steak, or a confit shoulder of lamb with rosemary. It will also go very well with a platter of fine charcuterie or roasted Mediterranean vegetables.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully enjoy the Hunter Valley Shiraz 2023, we recommend serving it slightly chilled, at a temperature between 14 and 16°C, after decanting for about thirty minutes. Designed to offer immediate pleasure, this wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to evolve favourably until around 2030.
The Elegance and Freshness of an Australian Shiraz
The Estate
Founded in 1858 by Englishman Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell's is a true institution located in Pokolbin, in the heart of the New South Wales wine region of Australia. Strictly family-owned for more than five generations, the estate is now run by Chris Tyrrell, who is gradually taking over from his father Bruce. Custodian of an exceptional heritage of very old vines, the house stands out for its ability to combine historical tradition with modernity. Recently certified sustainable, the estate produces wines recognised worldwide for their finesse and distinct regional identity.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from carefully selected plots among the finest terroirs of the Hunter Valley. The vines, around forty years old on average, are mostly grown without irrigation in order to encourage deep rooting. The estate applies certified sustainable viticultural methods, favouring organic soil amendments, natural grass cover and mechanical soil work to preserve biodiversity and the health of the plant.
The Vintage
The year was marked by a classic weather cycle for the region, with warm days ideally tempered by cool nights. These optimal conditions allowed slow, even ripening of the berries, ensuring perfect balance and excellent preservation of natural acidity.
Winemaking and Ageing
After both hand and machine harvesting, the berries destined for the Hunter Valley Shiraz 2023 are fermented in open vats, allowing gentle, controlled extraction. This Australian wine is then aged in large 2,700-litre French oak foudres that have been used before. The choice of used vessels refines the structure of the wine while preserving the brightness and purity of the fruit.
